An Indonesian woman has given birth to an 8.7-kilogramme (19.2-pound) baby boy, the heaviest newborn ever recorded in the country, a doctor said Wednesday.

The baby, who is still unnamed and is 62 centimetres (24.4 inches) long, was born by caesarean section Monday at a public hospital in North Sumatra province, a gynaecologist who took part in the operation told AFP.

"This heavy baby made the surgery really tough, especially the process of taking him out of his mum's womb. His legs were so big," Binsar Sitanggang said.

The boy is in a healthy condition despite having to initially be given oxygen to overcome breathing problems, the gynaecologist said.

"He's got strong appetite, every minute, it's almost non-stop feeding," he said.

"This baby boy is extraordinary, the way he's crying is not like a usual baby. It's really loud."

The boy's massive size was likely the result of his mother, Ani, 41, having diabetes, Sitanggang said.

She had to be rushed to hospital due to complications with the pregnancy, which had reached nine months. The baby, her fourth, was the only child not delivered by a traditional midwife.

When a diabetic mother's glucose level is high during pregnancy, the baby can receive too much glucose and grow too large, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Indonesia's previous heaviest baby, weighing in at 6.9 kilos, was born in 2007 on the outskirts of the capital Jakarta, according to the Indonesian Museum of Records website.

Diabetes combined with pregnancy complicating her diabetes.

Gestational diabetes, even well controlled tends to throw on an extra pound or three to baby weights because of the extra glucose that babies get inutero.

If it is poorly controlled it can be a lot worse. My only suprise is, if she was seeing any kind of OB/GYN, that they would have let her get to 9 months. Come 36 or 37 weeks and that baby should have been out (then it might have only been a 13-14lb baby).

Had to have. Otherwise you got a square peg/round hole issue. Squeezing that out would cause vaginal tearing that could extend to the anus. Aside from having to stich such tearing, which itself isnt a good thing, you then need to worry about infections also. My wife was forced to have a section 2 weeks early for our daughter since she was predicted to be 10lbs+ (came out 10lbs 7oz) and she is all of 5'0". Our son before was 8lbs11oz and he barely fit out, Doctor had to make some cuts just to squeeze him out.

I heard of another 18 lb or so baby... mom had diabetes too.. that's why its so important to keep it in check.. most times, they deliver earlier because the babies tend to be larger

I cant imagine how must the mother must have had to eat to support the baby before birth. My daughter is 13 months and barely weighs that much and eats all day!!

Not that much more then a regular pregnant woman. It caused by excess blood sugar, not by overall food intake levels. A 19lb baby doesn't require all that much more in the way of calories then an 8lb baby does, at least inutero. Certainly less then the calorie intake needed for twins.

As for square peg, round hole, I doubt very much that there is a woman alive where a baby that large would fit out the pelvic opening no matter the level of tearing or episiotime. C-section only.
