Fix Link Rot - Loads of Broken Links Make Site Less Usable

Many older threads in these forums suffer from link rot. They contain links to other threads in this site that no longer work. Two typical examples are (1) a thread containing a collection of links to DIY How To Walkthroughs and (2) a thread that links to the problem and solution discussed in another thread.

Example:
On page, http :// w ww.mazda3forums.com/355-technical-information-faqs-how-tos/300955-diy-how-walkthroughs.html, any link that points to a Mazda3Forums page with a URL formatting such as: http :// w ww.mazda3forums.com/68-2004-2009-exterior-modifications/394778-how-paint-your-valve-cover-right-way.html, works. Whereas, any link that points to a Mazda3Forums page with a URL formatting such as: http :// mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=3597&, fails.

Side note: I had to add spacing into those links to fool the site into letting me post them since I don't otherwise have enough permission to post links.

At some point, this site changed its URL formatting/structure. When it did, it failed to implement any kind of real fix for the dead links it created in the process. There are tons of them. Simply put, any link created before that URL formatting change and posted to this site that directs to another page on this site is now broken. (See example description above).

Thank you Fergus for responding. There's still a ton of links on that DIY How To Walkthrough thread and on every older thread in this site that are broken though. Every link to this site in the old format, i.e., w ww.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=some_topic_number, is broken. Whenever the site changed the URL formatting to the new format structure, w ww.mazda3forums.com/[forum id]-[forum name]/[thread id]-[thread title].html, they broke all of the old links.

I had to add spacing to the links to get them to appear as written. The first time I posted this reply the site automatically changed the links to FMVPerformance.com Network: The sites for all your Ford Mazda and Volvo Needs. Which wasn't very useful in this explanation.

Hey cdiggs,

Fergus is gone for the weekend so I can't ask what he did. Can you let us know what he missed? If it's a whole section the list of links within the DIY How To Walkthroughs for example under Mechanical Repair/Upkeep - all the links in Brakes.

If it's just a few missed, give us the title of that and we'll look it over.

Thanks,
Nate
