Settings for number of posts to show per page???

On many (most?) forums there seems to be a setting to show more posts per page. On some of the longer threads there are upwards of 50 pages of posts. It would be nice if there were a setting so that those threads would be maybe 5 pages? It takes too long to go thru some of these threads the way it is set up. Is this something that can be added to the forum, or is there a setting somewhere that I can't find?

Thanks.

We set it on the server side based on our desire to maintain database integrity and load. Larger pages take longer for the server to generate.

That's true, but consequently it also means you have to load them more often Just a suggestion. It would make browsing long threads a lot more enjoyable for broadband users. Thanks!

More frequent request with smaller responses is actually preferable in a multi-user system. You want each request to be as short as reasonably possible. This allows for much better scaling as the number of concurrent users goes up.

Actually if you're using a tabbed browser such as Firefox, Safari, or IE 7/8, what you can do is open up several pages of a post into separate tabs. I do that sometimes. Once you're done with one page, you close the tab and move to the next tab where the next page of the post is already loaded and waiting.

Re: Settings for number of posts to show per page???

I'm not criticizing the strategy, I'm just saying - I'm a member of many forums that allow up to 100 posts per page to be set in the user profile, and that have a LOT of users. Most users will not bother to change the default anyway, so the net effect is probably less troublesome that one might think.

Anyone who has tried to browse a really long thread knows how annoying it can be.

I use FF tabs extensively for general browsing, but it wouldn't help in this scenario. It's not the wait time that's the problem - the pages load for me faster than I can read them. The problem is on threads with 100 or more pages, it gets tiresome if you are just scanning the pics or whatever. Also, a "next page" link would be really nice, instead of having to click on the tiny page numbers.

Actually this is a really good point. There are Previous and Next links at the bottom right of a thread, but they take you to the previous or next thread in the forum. I can't imagine a scenario when I'd ever use that, personally. Do people do that?

I agree with this we need some small buttons to goto the next & previous page instead of the next thread & previous thread buttons...

That's probably doable... I can't say I'll make it a high priority, but it's something I could eventually look into.
