Just got a 2007 Mazda 3 2.3 5sp knocker

Hello,

Just bought me a 2007 Mazda 3 hatch 5sp with a 2.3L, 110k on it. The car is in great shape.... Except the engine, it has the death knock.

I had a 2003 Protege5 that had 250k on it when it bought the farm, 2.0L got the knock and I didn't feel like throwing money at a ľ mil mile car with rusty quarters.

This car I bought planning to swap out the engine, original 2.3 at first but now I'm planning on the 2.5 Ford, seems not too difficult.

Any help is appreciated, this will be my first time doing a engine swap. I'll post up on the proper forum.

I have been reading up on the various threads but I am trying to keep this as simple, no CEL, as possible.

Thanks for this great resource!

I've often toyed with looking for a late Gen 1 model with a dead or dying 2.3 and then dropping in a Duratec 2.5. I mean, better acceleration, more reliability, identical fuel economy, identical weight, what's not to like?

Here is link to my thread. It has good info and links to other 2.5 swap threads.

https://www.mazda3forums.com/799-int...-progress.html

The easiest, straightforward, good running, no CEL, no mods swap is doing a 2012 or earlier Ford 2.5 and using an adapter plate utilizing the original intake and throttle body. Personally, I would do a later model 2.5 swap with low mileage and use the adapter plate setup. The only mod will be to enlarge the VVT solenoid hole in your Mazda valve cover and swapping the VVT seal from the new engine to the original valve cover so you can use your valve cover with the newer VVT solenoid and keep your 3 wire coils. See writeup in thread.
