New Member, Help please. Engine sounds like diesel and sounds like spuratic popcorn.

New Member here, please help

Vehicle: 2006 Ford Fusion SE V6

Hi everyone, I'm new here and hope to get a little information and help please. My vehicle is listed above and need some help figuring out what could possibly be wrong. I would really hate to take it to the dealership without knowing or getting an idea of what may be wrong with it.

My engine sounds like a diesel and has a spuratic popcorn sound coming from around the plastic manifold. Car sounds like a harsh running diesel. If I place the car in drive, reverse or whatever it starts to drop rpm really low and sounds close to dying. I'm not sure to what could be causing this. I have not drove the car since this issue started and left the car sitting in the driveway and I have started it up from time to time to test the sound but I do not leave it running long as I'm afraid of more issues from the sound. My vehicle is non drivable and I'd be afraid to take it out of my driveway. Please help. If you need more information please let me know.

Btw I have tried changing the oil, spark plugs and what not but no go.

Please help and Thank you

I'm not an expert, but it almost sounds like the timing is off to me.

Well a popping noise in the intake could be backfiring. What is the history of the vehicle leading up to the problem (including any work done recently to it)? Does the CEL work, and if so is it lit while running? Can you check for trouble codes with a scan tool?

@Kayden17: When you changed the spark plugs, how did they look? Did the coils look fine?

Very well could be, I'm almost thinking the timing chain needs to be replaced and that it possibly has a lot of slack and causing the sound of popcorn and of course I assume this would be the reason behind the diesel sound with it running poorly.

How much would a timing chain replacement at the dealer or a shop cost?

I guess also Ford recommended every "close to" 100,000 miles which is early compared to timing chains typically lasting the lifetime of a car.

If this is backfiring what could be causing the car to backfire? Any ideas or anything I could try?

History of the vehicle is great. My fiance and I bought the car from the original owner and the car only had at the time 35,000 miles on it and the original owner was going through a messy divorce and wanted to get rid of anything that reminded him of his soon to be ex wife which is a car he bought for her. lol. At the time the car was only 2 years old and because he was going through a divorce, needing money and wanted his ex wiped out of his mind he sold everything, so we got the car for about $1,500 below book value.

Car has ran perfect with no issues engine or transmission ways period until this happened.

Car does have an aftermarket cold air intake on it but not sure this would cause any issues here.

CEL is working and it after a couple secs it comes on but last I remember the CEL does turn off and then I think comes back on again but yes I have seen the CEL come on.

I'm wondering if Oriellys Auto or similar auto stores will rent a scan tool. I know they rent everything else.

The spark looked good, they looked no different than my plugs and coils when I changed them in my 4Runner at other times.

No problem there
