Are superchips really super?

Automobile manufacturers must compete in a marketplace where fuel consumption, horsepower and torque are big factors, but they must also comply with emissions and other regulations. To meet these demands modern cars are controlled by computers. The computer, known as an ECU (Engine Control Unit), controls all engine settings like the air/fuel mixture, ignition timing and idle speed. A quick and easy way to do this and upgrade your vehicle’s performance is with a “superchip”, also known as an aftermarket performance chip. Aftermarket performance chips are made to adjust parameters to increase engine power and torque. The effects of the superchip can be easily reversed just by plugging it into the ECU and choosing the reset option, which will cause the ECU to revert to the factory settings. Overall, upgrading your ECU settings with a superchip is a fairly simple and low cost alternative for the everyday auto enthusiast.

I can't speak personally, but I know at least in the case of Hypertech one member did a before and after dyno and LOST power.

Thank you for your feedback. There is no general opinion about performance chips, or superchips. If the new chip is not programmed properly, you could experience reduced engine life. However, numerous test results and experience of our customers prove positive outcome.

I have a Super Chips Tuner for my Ford Ranger but the programs were done by another company. I did before and after acceleration tests and gained measurable improvement in performance. I also kept records on gas mileage. When I drove normally (not using the increased power), I was able to get 6 to 8% improvement in gas mileage.

I also think the vehicle has an improvement in drivability. Engine braking is considerably improved. I can shift quicker (manual transmission) because the engine rpm drops quicker and the throttle is much more responsive.

So, it really depends on the program in the tuner. The initial programs in my Super Chips Tuner gave me marginal improvement in performance but improved gas mileage. I have heard of some programs that provide no improvements.

The Hypertech I had "felt" like it had better power, but a dyno plot proved that really quickly; and showed exactly what I thought as being a boost in power, just a high angle in the curve after a short plateau; ultimately had zero gains.

Which is proof enough that a butt dyno really doesn't do proper justice majority of the time.

I didn't just use a butt dyno to determine performance change. I work in Aerospace and know how to set up valid tests. I selected a couple tests that could be done without starting from a stop (tire spin) and shifting gears (variable times). I used a race stop watch to measure times. The tests were done in 3rd gear to keep the event from happening too fast which could increase the chance of error. I timed 40 to 70 mph and 50 to 80 mph runs.

The 87 octane performance program gave a 0.7 sec improvement at 40 - 70 and 0.45 sec improvement at 50 - 80, over stock. The 91 octane torque program also gave 0.7 sec improvement at 40 - 70, but resulted in 1.2 sec improvement at 50 - 80.

I was not really responding to your post in defense, but after reading your post I realized I didn't back up my increase in performance statement. You just gave me the opportunity to throw out some numbers.
