Why do some people feel they must have the last word

I have taken noticed on forums specifically Car forums because they are the ones I follow most, that there are a few regulars and very new member's that fall into this threads topic. I have even seen threads locked after members squeezed in seconds before the lock by the moderators.(not necessarily on this forum) Some members that no matter what is posted on a thread respond back with something even a none thread topic related response or symbol? In a test recently giving appetite to my theory I was amazed to see by simply posting on a thread where a suspected last word poster was contributing did in fact respond with none related thread particulars and continued to follow up the same with anyone's subsequent responses related or not to the threads topic. This one person fell well within the "last word" response category. I was also interested to see that if nothing followed they tend to go away to find another thread to be challenged on or return if another response fell after their "last word" response.
I spent some time to look around to find the Psychiatry behind it and was surprised to see that this bothersome trend is not isolated. So I was wondering how other members here felt about this?

And yes I have fell compelled occasionally to toss in the last word on some threads. Guilty!

Useless off-topic "last word" posts on forums are definitely annoying and destroy the usefulness of the search functions. The last posts in a thread should be the problem solution and the OP's "thank you" and final outcome.

The useless posts should be discouraged by the moderators but I can see how it may be difficult to discourage the posters who are providing both useful information and at other times the drivel.

Moderators also want high post volumes so that revenues based on the sites traffic are maximized- so it's a tough balancing act.
