Thinking I'll downsize to a Mazda2...

Been debating getting a (in my mind) more competitive car for autocross in STF, I work on a lot of Minis at work and they're stupid fun but damn every other one needs an engine or turbo replaced

Thinking a Mazda2 will be a nice compromise, probably not quite as good, but cheaper to mod, better mileage, and I have a thing for goofy ass looking cars.

We have my wife's Fusion for long trips and normal kid transport, she hasn't been in my 3 in months so less room isn't a big deal at all.

Thoughts?

Personally, I wouldn't. If I didn't need four doors and four seats, I'd have another Miata, which is a Hell of a lot more fun/faster in autoXing.

Needing four doors and four seats, the 2 is freaking tiny.

I say have a seat in one at a dealership, sit IN THE BACK, and make sure that suits your needs. I have a kid at that age where I need twice the cargo space for her stuff I need for my own, so downsizing isn't any kind of an option.

actually....

Look up the real gas mileage; it is awful.
As in ... worse than my 3 awful.

Ultimately it's your choice, I know they are light and fun cars, but also insanely slow (~90WHP), but also get worse gas mileage than most think.

Go drive one. I was convinced I needed a tiny car. Mazda2 quickly fell off the want list after driving.

If going for a car smaller than the 3 my second choice was the Sonic. Seemed much more refined than the Mazda2.

If we're talking cars in the class, the Fiesta is pretty nice. Drove one as a rental while working out of town, and that would be my first pick. But like I said, first you need to honestly ask yourself if the amount of interior space is appropriate for your uses. I couldn't do a vehicle that size. Hell, next vehicle purchase in this family will probably be cutting my wife's 3 loose in a couple of years for a 6.

I've driven several, I like em. The fiesta interior sucks compared to the 2 IMO, same with Chevy Sonic.

I work on all makes and models at a big used car dealer, the 2 I'm transferring in to look at is a 2011 with 24k miles, for $10.5.

And it was a northern Florida car its whole life, so no Ohio rust(yet). I'll possibly get it under coated if I feel the need.

Well I did it. Its just a fun little car. Its honestly easier getting my son in the back of this than a 3 sedan, door opening is larger.

Definitely very slow, will be fun when prepped for STF.

Time to start with motor mounts, exhaust/maybe intake and a Dynotronics tune(if they ever get caught up with those who already paid). I'll hopefully be doing a T&T event April 5th with it to get my initial impressions before I do anything to it.

Oh and its a FL car... I was baffled when I looked under and the EXHAUST doesn't even have a bit of rust on it!

I need to tint the windows badly so I can be a bit closer to baller clown car status.

Check out the upcoming Mazda 2. Pretty good looking and Skyactiv....
*Edit: Didnt see you already pulled the trigger. It will be awesome with the autocross mods youre talking about.

Yeah, depending on how the new 2 is finalized(doesn't gain much/any weight, more power, interior doesn't get assed up), I could see myself buying one. I'll hold out in hopes for a Mazdaspeed2
