Does anybody in here work at the DMV? Or could maybe answer a question?

I want to get a older California blue and yellow license plate. If I buy a set off of eBay, and if the plate isn't already taken, could I register my car with the new plate and use the vintage plate instead of the new plates they would give me?
I know I would have to pay the yearly fee, that isn't the concern.

What makes my car.

Reading other threads about how people bent their plates to match the contour of their car, got ticketed, bent the plate back, still got ticketed for cracked paint on letters.

I'm sure California won't allow you to use old plates either. You probably have a citation in the mail right now for considering it, plus a warrant for identity theft for purchasing someone else's plates.

It's California, bro.

Ok. I think I'll go ask somebody at the DMV anyways.

I guarantee you that in just about any state you would be unable to use old-style plates unless they were originally registered by you.

Good luck on that. About the only way I know you can do that is if you have a historic vehicle, and historic plates that match years. For example, if you own a 1972 Chevelle (or whatever), and you have an old school 1972 plate, THEN they'll let you do it. At least here. Past that, they'll tell you to get bent.

A revolution gets its name by always coming back around in your face.

I ask because I've seen it before. Newer car with black yellow plates.
Maybe it wasn't legit, idk. But it got me interested.

Funny how you got answers from so many non-Californians.
