ESU Survey - Why Do We Join Car Groups?

I have to do a field experience project for my Pop Culture class at East Stroudsburg. The topic I choose is, Why are young adults (mostly) and adults into modifying cars so much? Is it for the social aspect to meet new people, is it to boost our own "ego" so to speak, or because it is the "cool thing" to do?

I was wondering if I could get some of your feedback as to why you join car groups such as Mazdaspeeders, Mazda 3 Forums, and many others? Why do you put so much time, effort, and money into our cars? I know car groups span a wide age-group and go back many decades all over the world. But I'm trying to find out why people belong to them?

I don't have to be bias or pick sides, I just need your feedback as to why you became a part of an expensive but fun and rewarding hobby?

Oh, is your assignment dependent on quantitative results? If so, you may want to turn this thread into a poll with about five or so choices for the members to choose from so you won't have a hard time trying to group a bunch of different responses.

Re: ESU Survey - Why Do We Join Car Groups?

I join car forums/clubs to get inspired on new ideas, meet new people, and show off my car. I originally joined just to get new idea's to mod, then it became an addiction. Throughout my experience here I've met many people in real life, and gotten to know others as well. I think the real answer depends on the forum. A forum like this, which is nation/world wide is more related to the car that the forum is about. It is more for modifying and showing off your car. I am also a member on a few local forum's, which is more for the social aspect. I don't meet many car enthusiasts at school or whatever, so the majority of my good friend's I've met on local car forums. I modify my car just because I like to, and it makes me feel good. I smile whenever I look at my car, I grin around every corner, I have fun washing it weekly. Modifying car's is just a fun hobby, and it's fun to show it off every now and then.

I have no Fusion. I have a Miata.

I need a new sig.

Re: ESU Survey - Why Do We Join Car Groups?

When i joined here a few years ago was just to just to find out more info about the car because I knew nothing about the Mazda 3 and to meet other owners.
That lead to getting ideas for mods to make the car more fun to drive and a lot more enjoyable. Also ways to personalize the car to set it apart from all the others on the road and make it my own.
Also get to meet a lot of new friends that also share the same interest.
As far as why to mod cars. Itís a fun and rewarding hobby in that you get to enjoy every time you use or see the car.
One I thing I really like is when you see it like in a parking lot and it stands out from the crowd as result of a mod. Even if itís just something simple like a painted emblem on the front.

Or like just the other day I was coming out of Pets Mart and seen some guy walking past checking out my Halo headlights. Or when others on the road notice the stuff like that and comment on how nice it looks. Iíve had people comment on mine at red lights even.
Itís a fun and rewarding way to show off your work that youíve done and your personality.
It donít matter if itís a cheap or expensive car old or new. Itís a since of pride knowing itís yours and you were able to personalize it.

I second this list, but I add "trolling" to it.
