Pulled over for failing to stop for school bus with red lights

seriously i am so annoyed i got pulled over for this. i live next to a school i would never pull a stunt like that and i did not even see a school bus. the officer told me it was there and the lights definitely was on when i ran past it. I said how come everyone else was driving by as well, I find it impossible to believe that no one yielded for this bus with red lights on. Officer said that he can only pull over one car and he was actually going for someone else but I got in front of him. He admitted that there were at least four other cars that went by but i was the "unfortunate" one. It's hard being mad at him cause he was very pleasant but c'mon there is no way any of us saw this bus if so many cars failed to yield. This is rush hour traffic it's not like we were zipping by trying to run lights, we were just moving at like 25mph from intersection to intersection in NYC.

there is no way to fight this right? another my word against the infallible word of the law?

In NJ you can lose your license for doing that. Personally in this case I'd pay the fine and let it go.

Good luck. You're going to need it if you do choose to fight the power.

It's an incredibly serious offense in Ontario too. Just pay the fine and pay a little more attention next time lol.

I have seen where the bus driver opens the door activating the red lights but is not stopped so you are stopped but the bus in moving.

Show up at court... there will be a cop there "giving you your options". If you haven't had any other offenses you can probably get off with no points, but have to pay a higher fine. In Jersey I'd rather pay the higher fine than have the points.

I only know this becuase my co-worker just went to court for a violation and that's what happened with him. He talked to the cop, paid an extra $30 or so on top of his $320 fine and got out of it with no points... It's a racket, but Jersey's broke so....

Re: Pulled over for failing to stop for school bus with red lights

yea i know it all too well. i paid $500 for my last ticket and to get rid of two points. last time it was definitely my fault and i was not upset, but this time it came out of nowhere and is hard to believe.

i don't mind these tickets it's the insurance premiums that is killing me.

If this happened in NYC and your driver's license is in NJ, just pay the fine and move on. Since you're out of state, the offense won't go on your license or your insurance.

Also, NYC usually doesn't give pleas for moving offenses, you just go and make your case. They're a bunch of ballbusters here, especially the Highway Patrol division. sounds like you got pulled over by a regular officer though, in which case, he might not even show up to the court date.

Re: Pulled over for failing to stop for school bus with red lights

NYC points carry over to NJ, out of state points not transferring was an old myth. Also if the cop doesn't show up they reschedule the court date they don't throw the case out. their rationale is they allow you to reschedule your court date so the cop should be able to as well-at least that's what i saw last time i was in court in NJ.

regardless it's a summons and i will show up hopefully talk to the prosecutor and plea bargain it down but if they are ballbusters then screw me. Either way i'm just upset that this was such BS. I wish i could demand the cop to turn over his squad car video or something to prove this.
