Re: Another noob computer question

If your card has a DVI output then you can get a DVI to HDMI cable from newegg for about $25... wouldn't go cheaper than that. The PC will treat the TV as a monitor. You'll need the latest drivers for your card to set the approrpiate resolution for the TV.

DVI is essentially HDMI just without the sound.

Re: Another noob computer question

you'll want to see if you need PCI or PCIe card. you prolly have one slot of each type unless you're already using one.

Re: Another noob computer question

Here is the manual for your machine - http://support.dell.com/support/edoc.../PDF/om_en.pdf

Based on what I've seen here your machine likely has a PCIExpress x16 slot Version 1.0a. While a newer card *should* work, they are all version 2.0 now, which may have compatibility issues with the older 1.0a slot.

To be safe I would recommend getting an older NVidia Card from ebay - The 7600GT has dual DVI outs and will be a good option for what you want to do, look for BFG or EVA brands if you can find them. There are others you could use for sure, but I use the 7600GT myself and it works.

You'll also need a DVI to HDMI cable - as stated earlier you can get one from newegg for $25; you get what you pay for with these, so going under $18 to $20 isn't a good idea, but there's no reason to pay $50+ for one either.

Note that I currently have mine setup with windows 7, and have not tested this using Windows XP so YMMV.

Re: Another noob computer question

Thanks for the info beans. Ill go with the 7600gt, i found some for like 30 on ebay. But what can i do about audio? My tv only has audio input in the form of rca cables iirc.

Re: Another noob computer question

Or a card that adds audio from your sound card to the HDMI out.

Re: Another noob computer question

If you're just running sound to your TV, and not an entertainment system then you're only going to get 2.1 stereo sound anyway. That means that you can use the same output that you use for your computer speakers; you can get the parts to do it from Radioshack. You can A/B it with your computer speakers, or have it split, or just use your TV for audio. The cheapest way to go is to get a 1/8th jack to RCA adapter for like $5 and just run the sound to your TV.

This is the answer i was hoping for. But i was curios as to what comparability issues I might run into, or if it was really that simple.

Thanks for all the help guys!
