How much do you spend on an engagement ring?

So....... thought I'd put it out there. What's a good amount to spend on an engagement ring? Not saying I'm looking, but it's getting close to that time.

Thoughts?

Also, on a similar topic, is it a bad thing to buy it from Costco? I was debating that with my friend. I figure it's okay provided it's a nice ring.

Like I said before... I'm not sure if I want to be a rider. If I ever do decide to do it, I will be starting small! lol

I got mine from a jewler friend. It's not really about how big of a diamond you get... it's about the color and clarity. Make sure you know your girl's taste. Don't want her to not like the ring.

Re: How much do you spend on an engagement ring?

IMO, it makes no difference where you buy it (as long as it's legit anyways ) if it's a reasonable quality ring and diamond.

As far as how much to spend, that really depends on the girl more than on you. The 2 or 3 months salary rule is bogus. Sorry, that's WAY too much money for a woman to be wearing on her hand each and every day. Maybe if you don't make much money, it will have to be 3 months salary, but even with moderate incomes that's approaching $15k which is ridiculous.

^ agreed. It's not the size that makes a ring important it's the meaning behind it.

Yup. 15 big ones would be a big chunk of a downpayment on a house.

Re: How much do you spend on an engagement ring?

I'm sure you want to do the right thing and not look like a fool... but on the other hand, you don't want to spend way too much and... you guessed it, look like a fool. So, what are you really buying? A symbol. Not a proof, not even something that is supposed to be representative of how much you love your woman. With that in mind, if your woman loves you for the right reasons, she will not care how much the ring costs. If she does, I would question myself whether I'd be willing to get engaged with such a person. I'm NOT saying your g/f is like that and I say this with the utmost respect to you and your love. But you understand where I'm coming from?

There is a fine line between being generous and being an idiot. Be generous and reasonable with a ring that is affordable for the money you make. Believe me, whether you buy a $15K ring or a $300 ring at Walmart, it's NOT going to make or brake your couple long term. It's not even going to be a factor in the equation.

By the way, when I got married, I paid $300 for the rings (both) at Walmart and my ring was bought at the same place, with my wife to be, and cost $29.99. Not even $30. We've been together for more than 15 years now and were never, ever separated for a single day during all those years.

PS: I did buy her a $650 necklace later on when I got more cash... years after our marriage. She loves it equally with her rings. The price really doesn't matter.
