Are there any body guys in here? got a couple questions on a repaint. (2010)

I had to get my bumper repainted on my 2010 sport, sport blue metallic, The body shop I took it to has a great rep (hence the reason I took it to them) but they seem to have forgot how to paint a car.. My bumper while it does "match" the flip on it doesn't.. maybe to much of something in the paint. Anyway, they have to wet sand and buff it out because i found some dust in the paint and the owner told me once that is done, it should help calm the flip down a little.. is it true?

Yes and no. It will help but it will not fix it. It sounds as if it were sprayed at the wrong air pressure. Body shops can easily match paint by the code. They do not know however what pressure the factory paint was sprayed. They should have done several test swatches in order to get the flake to "lay" correctly.

I was trying to explain it to him.. I told him clearly it needs to be repainted, so he wants to wet sand and buff it out first.. no my money go ahead.. here are some pics.

Keep in mind, the color is the same, the flip is what is off.

They "may" need to blend that paint up into the rear quarters to make it look right. I had 2 quarter size dents in the passenger front door. My painter ended up painting both doors, 1/2 of the rear quarter and 1/2 the front fender to get a great match. The body shop has to be willing to work to make these paint jobs right. Just matching the paint code and painting simply will not work as you can see.

It also may need a repaint. The way it is sprayed, there is not enough flake showing. Of course you already know that.

When you look at it in person the color matches, change the direction you're looking at it and bam, totally different color.. I can live with a slight change, because the factory bumpers did it, but this is to much.

Correct. Hence if they blended into the quarters it would be much less noticable. The reason that it is so bad is because there is a clear "line" between the bumper and fender.

I was going to buy an MRT hood for mine but by the time I painted the hood and fenders it would just be too much. I caould not just paint hood and put it on there. It would not look right.

Nothing to fear or worry about. Just tell the body shop to do their damn job and quit jerking you around. FWIW, mine went back twice and the body man is a friend. I can see things (because its mine) that he may not notice. No one's work will be perfect and we can all be critics. My guy was more than willing to make it right and make me happy. Your guy should be of the same mind.

He better make it right.. I brought it to them because they were good.. if he wants to play games, the internet is a very powerful tool.. and so is a lawyer..

Anyone who has this color knows it flips in certain light, I'm aware of this, but this is nuts.. it shouldn't look like it was repaired, the car isn't even a year old yet.

Re: Are there any body guys in here? got a couple questions on a repaint. (2010)

How did they let dust get between the layers of clear..... are they going to wet-sand then re-clear? or just wetsand and buff?

Lets say that dust is located in one of the layers of clearcoat that is closer to the paint, then they are going to sand all the way down to it (reducing your clear-coat) and then buff it out (reducing you clearcoat again).

Usually bodyshops have a few layers of clear more than factory paint but I just hope they don't sand down too low....
