Shingles!!! Who's had it?

 Shingles!

Two midnights ago, I was awaken by a weird sensation on my chest. I got up and took a good look of my sexy self in the mirror, there's a red spot on my upper chest, and it's more to the right side. Didn't think too much of it, probably just slept on something. So I tried to go back to sleep but I couldn't, I had a sudden onset of the chills. Again, I didn't think too much of it, just thought it was cold night. Put on a sweater and tried to go back to sleep.

Woke up that morning and I was freezing! I felt the chill throughout the morning shower (hot shower). Unconsciously, I ran my luffa over my right upper chest and ! What was that tingly, burning, pain sensation I just felt? Got out of the shower and the red spot turned into a rash. It's weird too, because there's a pattern to it, like this.
......
....
....
It's about as big as a thumb nail.

It's been two days and that patterned rash is still there. It doesn't hurt on its own (yet), but it does tingle/burn/hurt when it's touched. The chill is still there, and I've developed a slight itchy/scratchy throat. Finally gave my primary care physician a call to see if my sudden onset of flu-like symptoms and that patterned rash has anything to do with it. Sent him a picture of my rash.

Now he wants me to come in tomorrow morning to see him, along with a dermatologist. He's concerned about the little dots on the rash, and he thinks it could be SHINGLES!

I'm 25 years old so I'm shocked when he suggested shingles. Shingles don't usually pop up in people until they're 50's. Maybe my immune system has been compromised? Another virus (why not), leukemia (family history), stress (but that's every other day for me, who isn't stressed when you're 25 and trying to get into graduate schools).

I'm hoping it's not shingles because I've heard that it hurts like no other! Some people have described it as "needles piercing the skin" It is potentially paralyzing too, depending on where it pops up on the body. So far, the chest rash is the only one I see.

I hope I'm just developing a case of the cold/flu and that rash is unrelated. Although the chills and rash were noticed at the same time...

Who's had it here. Were your on-set similar to what I'm going through so far?

bummer. it could be shingles, although it isn't common in younger people. good luck with that.

I work in a lab and several M.D.'s here think it shouldn't be shingles, simply because of where it is (upper right chest, localized). Along with the age argument.

But then again, they recognize a pattern and they don't know what it is.

Re: Shingles!!! Who's had it?

So i ran into someone in lab who claims he's had shingles before. He said for him, it was more itchy than painful. He had it back in his dorm days, that makes his episode at ~18-20yrs old!

Re: Shingles!!! Who's had it?

Oddly enough that you mention this now, I'm having similar issues myself currently. Except I have a spot like that on my back, but it's about the size of a half dollar, and then another one on my stomach about the size of a dime. The one on my back ITCHES like hell. One on my stomach burns like I just put a lit cigarette out on it.

Don't have a sore throat, but I do feel like I'm running a fever. Since I got stupid bad chills.

I haven't thought much of it though since we just recently switched laundry detergents so I thought perhaps I was having a reaction to it. Not only that, but the spot on my back I thought could have been from laying underneath my car without a shirt on while I was adjusting something and possibly scraped it up when getting out from underneath the car while on the concrete, but it looks almost identical to the spot on my stomach and I don't recall scraping myself up. I'd think as big as that spot is, I'd have felt it happen. It's almost like it appeared overnight when I was sleeping.

A revolution gets its name by always coming back around in your face.

Re: Shingles!!! Who's had it?

I'd agree on the age semi-ruling it out, but otherwise it sounds more or less like Shingles, at least earlier on stages. It generally does hurt a lot, but it could be because of your age that it doesn't.

Simply resurgent Varicella Zoster virus (chicken pox).

When did you have Chicken Pox?
In college, I remember learning that one of the causes of shingles is having the chicken pox before age 1.
also are you on any medications??
