I've got a disease....

I finally have a diagnosis… I cannot be happy with a car. I have this problem where no matter what I own, the grass is always greener on the other side. In the past 3 years I have owned an RX8, MS3, and I am currently driving a 2001 Vette Z06. As you can see, I’ve been all around the sports car spectrum. Even though the vette has been my dream car since I was 6 years old, I am STILL not 100% satisfied. Lately I have been thinking about selling the vette and returning to the MS3. I miss the convenience, practicality, smoothness, etc. Plus, the attention the vette gets is not the type of attention I want. (aka cops and creepy old guys at gas stations) Don’t get me wrong, the Vette’s neck-breaking acceleration is always a thrill, but I can’t afford track days anyway!

Basically I am trying to figure out whether these “cons” are really bothering me, or whether I just have a commitment phobia when it comes to cars. Anyone with similar experiences?

Re: I've got a disease....

In my first 10 years of driving, I had over a dozen cars. I'm a little better about it now, but that's only because I'm becoming less impulsive and also realize what a money hog cars are.

In the end, you'll have to come to terms with the fact that the grass really is always greener somewhere else. Then, the key is to stop caring

Re: I've got a disease....

I used to switch cars all the time. I had 13 cars by the time I was 30.

I see you're 23. When you get older, more responsibility and start looking towards your future (not saying you're not now, these become more important to you as you age) you'll slow down and learn to be happy with what you have.

I would love a new car but I like driving a car with only 33k miles that was paid off years ago.

Re: I've got a disease....

Well, the good news is I am also cheap and always conscious about getting a good deal. (I have always had significant positive equity in all of my cars) I am about to close on my first house. I am realizing now more than ever how convenient the hatchback was. (It is annoying to borrow my girlfriend’s car every time I need to take my dog somewhere) But I have to wonder how much I will miss the neck-breaking acceleration from the lightweight, RWD Z06.

Re: I've got a disease....

There is only one true resolution to that problem and that is your vette and a practical cheap car or mini truck. You dont have kids you will need a truck with a house so go buy a "classic" truck older than 25 years 1985 or older and register it under QQ and pay like $150/yr for car insurance. Thats what I did when I first bought a house. but 2 kids and a (ex) wife dont fit a mini truck so needed to switch to minivan for the ex

Re: I've got a disease....

I have to agree with you on the practicality of the hatchback. I don't regret one second of buying my 3, seeing as how useful it is! But as for always itching for a different car? I can't tell you what to do about that. I'm also 23, but nowhere near you in terms of purchases (amount of cars and house). The 3 is my second car, and the first car I bought on my own. I do find myself wanting a new "sports" car for track only, much like my bf. He has a DD Civic, and then a 240sx track car. But if I were in your shoes, I would go back to the MS3 for now. Maybe when you're older, you can always go back to the 'vette and join the older crowd lol. But if practicality is what you're looking for, the MS3 is top notch the better choice I think it's normal for people to want a different car every now and then.

Re: I've got a disease....

This is why i prefer to build my own cars. You can make as much hp as you want/afford, and the sense of accomplishment negates the fact there will always be a better car out there.
