Radar Detectors

So i found the old thread but its been like a year since a post. Im thinking about getting a detector so if you use one just say which one and how its works for you, which are the best ones? Or if you think they arent worth it then say why. Also where do you have yours mounted at?
Im not sure if this should go in electronics or interior mods or what so im just throwing it in here.

Re: Radar Detectors

There are only 3 brands to even think of buying. Valentine 1, Escort and Beltronics (and Escort and Beltronics are like Ford and Mercury, same thing different grille and taillamps).

I've had Valentine Ones for years. Range is good and arrows are extremely helpfull and addictive (more on that next). Styling is a little outdated. Price is reasonable for the top tier category. Factory direct only sales.

Beltronics- I'd say the Beltronics equivalent of the following Escort models are fine, but I prefer the Escort as they have a few things that make them slightly better, like nice sounding voice alert compared to the 3 pack a day smoker voice on the Bell units. However, if you can get a buy they work well.

Escort- The dealership I work at became and Escort dealer a year or two ago so I get great deals on them. Before this I'd had only V1's. Esort has several models worth considering. The 8500 X50 is just below the V1 in range, and is the entry model from Escort. Nice unit and buys can be had. I'd skip the 9500i since the 9500ix isn't much more and has more features. The 9500ix gives up the slightest range to the V1 (same range as X50), but it has GPS lockouts for eliminating false alarms. So if you drive by a door opener 3 times, it learns its a false and locks it out. Also these will warn you of Speed and Redlight cameras (must download from the internet and there is a small fee). The 9500ix is my recomendation for most new detector users as over sensitive detectors that require the driver to make decisions can desensitize the driver putting you at risk. The new unit from Escort is the Redline. This thing has the best range of any dash mount detector available. I have 2 V1's, had a 9500ix, and the Redline is much better in the range department than any off them. However, its like the V1 and is "noisy".

The ultimate detector price no option is the 9500ci. This is a custom installed unit that has the range of the Redline (may be slightly beter because of external antenna in grill of car), Laser jammers (but they are better jammers if Laser is a key threat), and all the GPS features of the 9500ix. I've got one of these in our Five Hundred and it is the King of radar detectors, but has a royal price to match.

I've got the Redline in my Fusion, and I'd recomend it over the V1 due to the range advantage as well as the display options, voice alerts and other features. However, if you've had a V1 its hard to get used to giving up the arrows, but I've adjusted and if you've never had a V1, you won't miss them.

If you want a custom installed detector like the 9500ci, Escort just added the Qi45 and its basically a 8500x50 with remote display and radar horn mounted in the grill. I prefer the 9500ci to it, but it is still a nice unit that can be cleanly installed.

As to the others (Cobra, etc.), the false sense of security they give is too much to offset the slim chance they may give you protection (you are much more likely to get a ticket than a Warning if they see the detector). So I'd go with one of the above or go with nothing.

As to mounting, high is the best bet, they tend to get better reception up high and are also harder to see by both Law enforcement and theives, and the jokers like me that carry a portable radar gun and like to screw with people with junk detetors on their dash (it's a lot of fun).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Radar Detectors

I'm a detector junkie, so I won't part with any. The two V1's are the only ones I'm not using and one is a current V1 and the others the last pre-POP (3.813) model that has the best range of any V1 made based on many tests.

If you want an Escort, shoot me an email and I'll see if I can get you a new one at a good price from work.

Re: Radar Detectors

I've got an Escort Passport 8500 X50 red. It's amazing. You can change the display to show the amount of signal your getting too. Say you've got a K alert from a Wal Mart near by and a cop running Ka close by. It'll show you the strength of each signal and reduces false alarms. It's great. I paid $300 for it from best buy. The blue looks cooler but not worth $40 more. I've got it mounted low on the window because I don't want to hard wire it and the top of the windshield has those black dots. I wouldn't recommend getting one used. I've done this before and it worked out great and bought a used one once and it was actually stolen so Escort wouldn't repair it.

Re: Radar Detectors

i had an older 8500 too...bought it about 5 years ago right before i went to college....i liked it but....i really dont know that it helped much....radar detectors are great if you are on a busy road and there are lots of other cars that are getting hit so you can know someone is up there....but if you are alone or on low traffic areas it doesnt really help much....i got 3 tickets using my passport and after i got rid of it (actually it just stopped working) i havent had one since...maybe i got better at naturally knowing and scanning for cops...but to me it just seemed like i did worse with the actual detector

Re: Radar Detectors

I hear the Beltronics STI line are the only ones that baffle the cops up here in Ontario, where in their infinite wisdom they have made them illegal. I have lost a couple Cobras to the cops, so will not ever buy them again. Have been told that the V1 and the Escorts do not hide against Spectre 2 all that well?

Re: Radar Detectors

Here in NJ 99% of the cops use Ka which VERY little laser. I'm not sure wh spectre2 is but if it's the type where the cops pulls a trigger, the escort manual says that it's virtually impossible to defend against that, however the owners manual for the radar system says never issue a ticket while using that type of radar. Who knows. The cops like to hide on the grass median here at night so if they continue to use Ka, they are defenseless against my escort.

Re: Radar Detectors

Oh I miss the Ka days.... now they are much more advanced and sneaky. I stopped once to assist a break down on the side of the road, and then about 10 later a cop showed up and asked both of us who had the detector. He then proceeded to write me a ticket, confiscate my detector, and had the gall to tell me that if I hadn't of stopped he would have never found me....

Good Samaritan.... fuck that noise.... cost me a detector, $170 and 3 demerit points that day.

Re: Radar Detectors

Geez, and I always heard how nice Canadians were. In NJ every town is broke due to corruption so they have no money for radar detector detectors, etc. It's not illegal anyway..yet.
