Tried to get ahead in Traffic...FAIL

I'll preface this with...this is in no way a street racing story. Enough said.

I was on my way home from work today, and I was exiting a parkway to get onto a highway. I had to stop at a traffic light, then my on ramp was about 1/8 mile ahead on the right hand side. There was a long line of cars on my right waiting at the red light, so I got into the left lane, planning on pulling in front of them and then getting over to the right for the on ramp. I barely paid attention, but there was a Dodge Cummins Diesel-type-thing on my right. Big, slow truck, so what? Well, when I started to go, I could hear his turbo-diesel start sucking in air and making all sorts of noises. I got on it, shifted into second...but he was still right there, so I shifted into third and started to pull in front of him, but then the on ramp was right there, so I had to slow down and get behind him for the on-ramp. :x

The on-ramp was two lanes, so he careens around the inside lane, I swear I could see his tires come up off the ground. The on-ramp makes a very tight nearly 270 degree turn, and he is doing all he can to stay in front of me. Needless to say, I pull over to the left lane and fly by him, then onto the freeway where he becomes a distant spec in my mirror.

So first, I can't believe this truck could keep pace in gears 1 and 2. But after looking up the specs on this beast, it makes 610 ft-lbs of torque!! That's 9 ft-lbs of torque per pound of curb weight! But it only makes 350 horsepower (and weighs 5500 lbs) so that explains the sudden lack of oomph at higher speeds.

I had a similar instance when I had the RX8. Not trying to 'race', but the truck was trying to 'keep up' to not allow me to get ahead on the on ramp. I ended up in front after getting near the top of 2nd gear (65~mph), but it was a little surprising to see the truck keeping up at first.

Re: Tried to get ahead in Traffic...FAIL

after working on a stock evo 9, for warranty work I took it for a test drive like I always did and on the interstate as I try to merge, There's a diesel (dodge cummins with a stack) pickup who decided he wants to rev at me. For some odd reason, so I thought, why not, and I eased into it( truthfully not my car ) figuring I'd out run him... Nope!, he mashed on it and pulled ultra quick. So, I tried to catch him as I saw him pulling away and there was no way. So, not only are those guys mostly assholes who think their trucks are awesome and that all 4 bangers are ricers...

-CoolGuy stickers, mad awesome bright lights, blackedout lenses, super wicked general tires I got from Sears for forty dollars, some random size shift boot, mad skillz shift knob with fake carbon fiber. This is the stuff you put in your sig when you have nothing done to your car but you want to feel kewl with your wire wrap and neon LED underdash lights.

those diesel trucks can get fast, really quickly and easily.

but they can enjoy their -1 mpg

Don't buy from Dabears2k.com - They sell counterfeit parts.

In Houston, we took a bunch of Sentras out to HRP. Some of them were DET swapped and ran 13 something quarters. Seemed every time they lined up, it was against a diesel truck that ended up (literally) smoking them.

Re: Tried to get ahead in Traffic...FAIL

There are douches like that all around here! Mostly Ford Super Duty's though. I hate it when they think they're all cool and whatnot, flooring it in order to get ahead. When I see that black smoke pour from the exhaust I just laugh and shake my head and think "9 miles to the gallon? Have fun with that." I hate driving next to big trucks anyway cuz for some reason I always think they're gonna come into my lane as I'm just casually driving next to them. And speaking of trucks, I got caught between 2 semi's a couple weeks ago on the freeway! I floored it to get outta there! That freaks me out, I tell you what lol!
