Tried to get ahead in Traffic...FAIL
I'll preface this with...this is in no way a street racing story. Enough said.
I was on my way home from work today, and I was exiting a parkway to get onto a highway. I had to stop at a traffic light, then my on ramp was about 1/8 mile ahead on the right hand side. There was a long line of cars on my right waiting at the red light, so I got into the left lane, planning on pulling in front of them and then getting over to the right for the on ramp. I barely paid attention, but there was a Dodge Cummins Diesel-type-thing on my right. Big, slow truck, so what? Well, when I started to go, I could hear his turbo-diesel start sucking in air and making all sorts of noises. I got on it, shifted into second...but he was still right there, so I shifted into third and started to pull in front of him, but then the on ramp was right there, so I had to slow down and get behind him for the on-ramp. :x
The on-ramp was two lanes, so he careens around the inside lane, I swear I could see his tires come up off the ground. The on-ramp makes a very tight nearly 270 degree turn, and he is doing all he can to stay in front of me. Needless to say, I pull over to the left lane and fly by him, then onto the freeway where he becomes a distant spec in my mirror.
So first, I can't believe this truck could keep pace in gears 1 and 2. But after looking up the specs on this beast, it makes 610 ft-lbs of torque!! That's 9 ft-lbs of torque per pound of curb weight! But it only makes 350 horsepower (and weighs 5500 lbs) so that explains the sudden lack of oomph at higher speeds.
