Racial or Ethnic profiling...is it fair or appropriate?

Racial or Ethnic profiling (at airports)...is it fair or appropriate?

This is a tough question...but I say yes.
Do we need people from Nigeria or Yemen or... coming to America?
Why are they coming here?
How do we benefit by letting practically anyone from terrorist hotbeds into the country?
If they have money for travel, shouldn't they be spending that money to the benefit of their own impoverished nations? Do we let potential terrorists into the country so they can go to Disneyland?

Discuss.....

I agree in profiling in general. Anyone who doesn't, well just isn't using common sense.

Profiling to a professional and respectful degree benefits many and saves lives.

Don't buy from Dabears2k.com - They sell counterfeit parts.

You're really asking separate questions. You can make a rational justification for profiling in terms of security without questioning the worth of every person within a classification.

We've benefited a lot from immigrants/visitors, including those that share ethnicity with extremists.

My only real beef is that it makes little sense to profile strictly on nation of origin when the most likely source of the next big attack is someone of EU residency/citizenship....

i'm just saying it makes sense to scrutinize a Nigerian student more than an 80yr old Scottish woman....

and if somebody doesn't think that one of them is more of a potential risk..that is just obtuse.

That's the whole point of profiling, identifying the most likely source of risk. It's probably why a Nigerian/African was chosen for this latest task (i.e. not the obvious scary Arab, Persian or SE Asian).

My point still stands in that you can't wall off the nation from those that are unlucky enough to share ethnicity with extremists. It would accomplish nothing and starve us of what we need (foreign investment, educated/skilled immigrants, etc.).

oh geez, i didn't realize the detroit bomber was investing in America, or was filling a job position that could not be filled by one of a million unemployed Americans.

Come on, John, I expect a more challenging/intelligent argument, even from you

Maybe you should research how many petro-dollars American giants rake in from Nigeria, how much of our oil we get from them, etc.

Let's just outlaw all contact with the nation. Problem solved!

You really can't be so simple minded, LOL.

Re: Racial or Ethnic profiling...is it fair or appropriate?

i don't think i said that...

i said it's reasonable to scrutinize certain people more closely...not ban everyone from foreign countries from entering the US.
