a question just pops up, anyone has the answer?

I was reading a thread about a guy who ordered his car from the factory and waited 3 months to get the car shipped to the United States. I tried to figure out how this thing works...but I think maybe I should ask on the forum to get a better idea.

does this order process have a deadline? for example, 2010 Mazda 3 hit the dealers in September 2009, so if I decide to order a 2009 model in October 2009, is that possible? or I have to place the order long before the new model comes to the dealers lots?

if the old model and the new model are the same, say 2010 mazda 3 and 2011 mazda 3, can i order a 2010 mazda 3 in later 2010?

not trying to do the order because i have already got my car, but think that would be interesting...

Each manufacture has start and stop production dates for their models. The model year you order/eventually receive depends on what their stop/start dates are.

As an example, my friend ordered a BMW this summer. His order was placed in May and delivered in August. Had he waited 6 weeks later, he would have been ordering a 2010 model because their model year order cutoff was in mid June.

I'm not entirely sure on how the process works myself. But say if that is what somebody would do (order a 2010 car in later 2010), I think that is possible. Not all cars made a certain year are made at the same time (as you might already know), but someone might want a 2010, just made a little later so it's more "new" than had it been produced a few months prior. But I don't think this would work if they had already stopped production when someone wanted to order it. Say, I want to place an order in March for a 2010 Mazda3 to pick up the following October, but by September, all production of the 2010 models will be stopped to make room for the 2011 models. Or something like that lol. Kinda hard for me to explain how I see it when I don't really know how it works
