got a ticket from a DC speeding cam - should I fight it?

got a 51mph in a 40mph automated speeding cam ticket in the mail yesterday. should I fight it? If I were doing 1 MPH less, the fine would be $30, not $50. Is arguing that the radar could potentially be off by 1mph be worth my time? or is the $20 not worth arguing?

Are you asking if you should take time off of work, go to court and try to argue your case to save $20?

Umm, no, it's not worth it unless you only make $20/week.

ask yourself one question, how exactly are you going to argue that?

well i know for a fact mazda 3 spedometer is off by 1mph, so if it shows 20, in reality you're going 19 mph. That's a start.

In reality all you can do is question the accuracy of the device.

Ask questions like "When was it calibrated", "Who was it calibrated by?", "where is the certification of calibration?" etc. Do the research, your best bet

Re: got a ticket from a DC speeding cam - should I fight it?

A man was driving when he saw the flash of a traffic camera. He figured that his picture had been taken for exceeding the speed limit, even though he knew that he was not speeding.

Just to be sure, he went around the block and passed the same spot, driving even more slowly, but again the camera flashed. Now he began to think that this was quite funny, so he drove even slower as he passed the area again, but the traffic camera again flashed. He tried a fourth time with the same result. He did this a fifth time and was now laughing when the camera flashed as he rolled past, this time at a snail’s pace…

Two weeks later, he got five tickets in the mail for driving without a seat belt

Re: got a ticket from a DC speeding cam - should I fight it?

For $20 and no difference in points (I don't think the DC speed camera tickets can assess points) your best bet is just eat the $20 difference.

Taking half a day or a whole day off work to go to court and then potentially have to pay court costs isn't worth it. Court costs are around $20 as it is for traffic court most places (well, in MD at least), so if you fight it and get it reduced to $30 from $50, your going to have to face paying $20 in court costs.

Just eat it and remember to go no more then 5 over in the district.

How is that a start? The camera didn't peek into his car and look at his speedometer.....

What you never argued in court "Well your honor, my speedometer is regularly 5mph fast, so if the officer got me on radar for doing 68 in a 55 I must have really only been doing 63"

Not worth your time..pay the ticket and move on, drive slower next time and you won't have to make this kind of decision
