Stolen license plates

Came home today and turns out my parents and my brothers license plates were stolen. They ripped the whole mount of my parents front bumper so I'm sure there is some sort of damage just to dark to see right now. Has this happen to anyone else.

Re: Stolen license plates

Yep my dad's got stolen at work, so he got a replacement. 2 days later he came out to find the plate half ripped off. Apparently some guys in a gold saturn (same car, my dad's is white) were in the process of taking this one too and some lady saw them, yelled at them and they ran off. Hasn't happened again since. I guess he parks right next to the store now. He used to park close to the street, far from the store (huge Winn-Dixie parking lot).

Re: Stolen license plates

Same here, they took the license plates off every car in the parking lot and put them in a pile. I'm sure more than 75% of them didn't know their own plate number. I wasn't driving at the time but if I was I would have been set because my car was the only one in the lot older than 30 years old and therefore had a baby blue collector's plate.

Re: Stolen license plates

In CT they pretty much got rid of that problem. We used to have a small sticker that was applied to the plate, which showed month/year of expiration. So people (criminals) would take plates with "good" stickers and put them on their cars. Now we have no more plate stickers. The registration sticker goes on the inside of the windshiled. Now they'll have to steal the whole car.

Re: Stolen license plates

That doesn't stop anything. The plate doesn't become inactive if it's not paired with the sticker. They can still put that plate on another car and be perfectly fine until they get pulled over and the plate ran.

Re: Stolen license plates

No, because the cops are looking at the windshield stickers. They are color-coded. If it's expired, they'll stop you.

Re: Stolen license plates

Parking stickers for parking in the city of Chicago were $135 per year. One of the tricks the gang members did was bust out window with a baseball bat, take the section where the sticker was; pick off the glass and then re-sell the sticker for $35.

The alternative to buying a sticker was gettting towed. Before you could get the wheel lock removed you had to pay for the sticker PLUS the tow charge which was $350.

Students in the Hyde Park area were essentially open wallets for the city the first few weeks of school. Of course having a sticker didnt assure you of a parking spot. Many times I would park blocks away from my apartment just to get a spot.

Re: Stolen license plates

What does a parking sticker prove? Or is it just there for the county to get money?
