Re: DC Sniper put to death

I'm all for it as well, if you kill someone intentionally then the same shall be dealt to you!

also, I'm all for getting rid of "gun free" zones... they're only gun free if you're actually obeying the law... school shooters, the nut at Ford hood... all of them didn't plan on obeying it anyway, so I say we give citizens the ability to defend themselves and deal out that death sentence on the spot! because almost anyone who goes through the trouble of getting a concealed carry permit is a good person trying to defend themselves and others... from nuts like the DC sniper and all the other mass murderers in recent history...

but seriously, what convinces people to do these things?

(sorry a little off topic)

Re: DC Sniper put to death

The death penalty's a weird issue for me. I think it has a place (certainly in this case) when dealing with undeniable evil. However, I have reservations about giving the government (and in extension, the public at large) the ability to play God.

I guess my quandary is whether it's worth it to keep it around to be possibly misused against innocent people yet provide punishment for evil or to abolish it entirely and remove state sanctioned killing.

I'm all for dropping hellfire missiles on militants in Waziristan, but just can't be totally comfortable with agents of the state putting an American down.

I agree completely. Actually had a debate on another forum about Ft. Hood. Someone saying the guy must have been a great shot and all to kill so many military and all. But the problem is, WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE PERSONAL WEAPONS ON BASE. This means if someone Illegally has a weapon and starts shooting, us that are law abiding have ZERO way of defending ourselves.

Laws keep honest people honest. It does ZERO against those that would actually use that weapon illegally.

Re: DC Sniper put to death

At the risk of being a huge hypocrite (given how many threads I blatantly hijack), let's not turn this into a gun control debate. The more interesting (and likely more civil) discussion to come out of this is about the death penalty. Every person within a square mile of the sniper shootings could have had a sidearm and nothing would have been different. Kinda hard to kill a sniper you can't see with a 9mm on your ankle.

But its only ever been used to kill someone who already has played God. IE: The DC Sniper played God by randomly choosing when 10 people would die. The death penalty has been around for a very long time and has not been used in situations other than when the person killed someone.
So I agree if misused, it should not be allowed, but that has not happened.

In this situation, since it was a sniper, I agree, no one was going to stop him in the act. I have been shot at by a sniper, and I was HEAVILY armed each time. And not a single time did I fire a return shot.

Re: DC Sniper put to death

Agreed. The sniper was sitting in the trunk of a car for 8 out of the 10 killings, like anyone knew where he was doing the shooting from.

Hence the term sniper.

I'm for the death penalty if there isn't a shadow of a doubt that the suspect is guilty, and if the crimes fit being put to death. In this case, oh hell yeah, kill that bastard, 10 times.

However, there are times when the death penalty may not be fitting. Such was the case down in Texas a few years ago, a guy was executed for allegedly setting a fire which killed his 3 daughters. Well, after he was executed, new evidence surfaced that he may not have done it.

Whoops.

A revolution gets its name by always coming back around in your face.
