Cost of Living

I'm curious as to what bills are like for a couple living (2 people only) together in a home.

Bills such as the water, oil, electric bill, and groceries.

If possible I would like to hear from people who live in a High Cost of Living Situation. Such as those who live in NJ, NY, PA, or CA. Or any other state that has a considered High Cost of Living.

I mean no hard feelings for what I post on this website. Anything I type/write/post/say on this forum is only that of general debate and discussion. I am not biased toward anyone or anything. I am neutral in everything I do on this website. Only those facts that are presented to me sway my thought process and siding of each discussion topic that I post about.

Re: Cost of Living

San Diego, CA
rent(dirt cheap) 650
utilities included
groceries 500(2 people split)
gas 120 per car (30 miles avg/day)
avg night out 75 dolars ( drinks + moderate priced dinner)

Now we live pretty cheap: we found a furnished, all utilities paid apartment. In reality I would expect to pay about 800-1000 a month for rent and then another 200 for full utilities. If you rent they usually are included. Owning is a whole 'nother monster...

Re: Cost of Living

Seattle has high costs of living due to our limited amount of land to build on. But with cheap hydro electric, my power bill is only $35 for TWO months. However my water bill is $65 per month, crazy since we have such an abundance of water here. I don't keep track of what is spent on groceries. I just buy what I need/want. Gotta eat right!

Re: Cost of Living

It is terrible here. Gas off base is around $3.80 a gallon. A normal 3 bedroom 1 bath rental home is around $1,900 a month. My MS3 was priced at $32,999. I was quoted over $42,000 on an IS350. It costs $40 to mail a 10lb box here. (if not in priority box). A thing of velvetta cheese costs $6.00. A case of budlight costs $27.

Pretty much, take California prices and add 20%.

Since it costs more for you to live there, I'm sure we pay you accordingly

My COLA (cost of living allowance) is $505 a month. Its nice to get, but goes quickly.
Have you ever seen the commercials for Taco Bell? Soft taco $.79. Then in the corner they have except in Guam, $1.29

You know the wendys $.99 menu? Its a $1.29 menu here!!! Prices on combos at any fast food is about $1.50 more. Eating out is insanely expensive. The $505 comes no where close.

Re: Cost of Living

Central MD right smack between DC and Baltimore.

Verizon FIOS (TV, internet and phone) - ~$140 a month including HD box and taxes
Electric - $60-100 a month (energy efficient townhouse, talking to my neighbors most of them spend about $200 a month on their electric bill as an idea of average)
Wireless - $70 a month
Food - ~$400 a month, that is for 2 adults and a toddler (it wasn't that much cheaper when it was just my wife and I, maybe $350 a month on average before our son came along)
Homeowners insurance - $800 a year (about $350k of coverage)
Property taxes - ~1% of property value per year (about $3,200)
Water/sewer bill - ~$60 a quarter
HOA - ~$80 a quarter
Local income tax - State varies by income level but generally around 4.75% unless you are really stinking rich or just a student working a summer job (4.75% from $3,000-200,000), but county it is 3.2% flat for Howard county.
Car insurance - The 3 with $1,000 deductible and no points or accidents $850 a year, my wife's '98 subie with just liability and no points or accidents $460 a year

Hope that gives you an idea of cost of living for central MD.
