Recommend me a computer!

Well we have had our Dell for about 3 years now. Its one of the XPS's and I have had problems with it through out owning it. Its time for a new comp and I am not up to date on computers at the moment.
My price cap is about $1000. I have been considering one of the all in one computers to clean up the desktop in the living room.

I have had 2 sony Vaio laptops and have been EXTREMELY happy with them.

Is it worth it to get something like this, or can someone recommend something? If I go with a normal desktop I don't need a keyboard, mouse, speakers or monitor...I have them already.

Build one

Its really is the best way. If not, then check out iBuyPower. Some of the cases are ridiculous, but they give pretty good deals for pre-built high end computers.

Re: Recommend me a computer!

I have considered the build route. I will see what I can build. My only problem with building is, I get carried away. If I have options, I always go with what I want, and that ends up EXPENSIVE!!!

Re: Recommend me a computer!

Well you have options either way, but building it and buying the parts online will be cheaper. In terms of going with a desktop or laptop, depends what you want the computer for. If you are thinking more towards the laptop side, I suggest ASUS. My brother got one earlier this year, and its pretty nice.

In terms of a desktop, try to find a deal that sells both a motherboard and processor. If your board has crossfire support, get an amd video card, if it has SLI get nvidia. Just incase down the road you wish to run two cards via Crossfire/SLI. IMO AMD has been releasing some nice cards lately. You can get a 4890 for $220 or so, which is decent.

DDR3 for RAM still seems to be more expensive, but you can find stuff thats pretty comparable to DDR2, like these two 2gb sticks for about $100

Of course youll need to consider things like powersupply, a case, etc. I bought my computer a year ago, so its been a while since ive looked into this stuff, and im pretty out of date on whats good in terms of cases and powersupplies. However, I am really fond of the Antec 900 I have, maybe look for a more recent series of Antec.

Re: Recommend me a computer!

I went to that IBUY.COM and it is awesome. Built a nice computer and the price is pretty decent. THANKS. Still have to decide.

As far as the comp. Its mainly for the wife, I use my laptop (as I am now) and I love it. Sony Vaio.
For video, most I see have the ATI RADEON available. But there are tons of levels. You can get 2 different 1tb video cards, but totally different prices. Not sure on what is better?

Re: Recommend me a computer!

Oh, and I don't really want to do a build with individual components. If I build it will be a build to spec type of thing, something like what was recommended above, IBUY.COM.

Re: Recommend me a computer!

Hmm, I think youd want atleast a 650watt powersupply. Other than that it looks decent. Im not sure how the 9500gt compares, I have both a 9800gt and 8800gt (both are pretty much the same), im not sure how it compares to that. If its for wife, and shes not really doing any hardcore gaming it should be fine.

Re: Recommend me a computer!

9500gt's are pretty old and arn't that fast, but if you dont need a lot of video processing power it will be fine for things like movies or youtube video's.

Re: Recommend me a computer!

You should definitely look into the newer Intel Core i7 processor line. From what I've read, these processors are a step up from just about everything else available.
