I'm not even wearing genes....

And I think study has been done a long time ago, people label themselves. They just kinda spelled a little different.

Re: Dab driver, its in your genes

"These people make more errors from the get-go, and they forget more of what they learned after time away,"

That line is what makes me think its quite possible. The fact that it would affect your judgement, and your emotions in some way. Individuals who are bad at knowing their surroundings, and are careless are likely to be bad drivers. Just common sense really.

Re: Dab driver, its in your genes

I would have agreed that if your parents are bad drivers, you're likely to be a bad driver. Both of my parents are very defensive drivers, they know the rules of the road, etc. My aunt is HORRIBLE. She will see a traffic light turn red a mile up the road and tap the brakes because of it. Or if someone next to her is slowing down to turn, she will slow down.

My mom: ....why are you slowing down?! Keep going.
Aunt: That guy slowed down to turn
My mom: Yeah and?! you're not turning, your car is not attached to his!

So as a result, my cousins were both terrified of driving, neither of them got their license until they were 18. And I'm sure when they drive they aren't the best drivers because they've grown up with horrible driving.

Re: Dab driver, its in your genes

this may be a little offtopic...but im getting a little tired of this gene b.s.....it seems like they have a gene to blame everything on....genes that make people want to be risk takers...genes that make people less social...now genes that make you a bad driver...driving is a learned skill...how could we have genes that determine a specific learned skill...now im sure their are genes that determine how well we learn...but not how well we do a particular skill that has to be learned

in particular i dont like this line "The next time you see a motorist obliviously straddling two lanes, don't fault bad driving, but genetics."...what is next? o don't blame him that he murdered 22 people with a pickax....it was his genes...he had no choice...that is bs....

Yeah I think they exaggerated it a bit. I mean I can understand the genes causing you to not react as well, or have a rather short attention span, but to blame downright poor driving on genes is a little out there. The way they put it, some people shouldn't be able to get a license because they're not genetically capable of driving safe.

Re: Dab driver, its in your genes

exactly...like ive heard of insurance companies starting to look into genes so they can deny people coverage if they have a gene that is a marker for a certain type of illness...even if they are healthy and do not show signs of having it or anyone in their family

Re: Dab driver, its in your genes

Opps on the spelling.

As for blaming genes, sure it is getting a bit out of control, but based on what the researchers found in the study it makes sense to me. If you genes are literally causing your bring not to secrete chemicals that it needs to retain information or focus then that is obviously going to impact anything that requires concentration or situational awareness, not simply driving. Heck you probably aren't going to pickup on other things as quickly either.

Can you get around that, certainly, but you are still going to be more handicapped then someone with out the 'gene issues'.

When it comes down to it how much is genes and how much is how you raised really goes back to what you believe in, nature vs nuture. Frankly I think we are finding out that nature has a hell of a lot to do with what we do and how we do it and nuture a whole lot less.

Its hard to argue that our genes don't simply control how our body functions and how it is made up, but also how our brain functions and how it is made up. How your brain is setup is going to determine how easy it is for your 'programs' to run or if 'programs' are going to crash.

Your brain rewires itself as you grow up and even does a bit of it when you are older, but your genes are still going to determine the basic mapping and tendancies in there no matter how you are raised.

no, not really.. im really bad at noticing stuff (i.e. details of an object, stores that i pass by, etc)... but when it comes to driving, im pretty good (above average) at sensing the projected paths of other objects and my car

i know what u mean.. blaming the gene doesnt make it sound any better either; it makes the person sound like he is an inferior being in the evolutionary process

altho not a fact, but i sometimes wonder if genes not only define our looks but also define our personality or not..i wonder how deep do genes actually define us.. call me crazy, but i wonder if genes define our future as well
