What if the internet died...and never came back

Abalinka and i were having this discussion during lunch today. We both agree that the world would have to do some serious adjusting.

The biggies that came to my mind:

-books, magazines, and newspapers would make money once more
-all of the e-business's having to make the shift to a storefront
-ebay would be gone(gasp!!!!!)

what are your thoughts?

I would probably die.

I've pretty much eliminated all other media from my life (outside of phone/text).

It's a dumb question. If the internet stopped working it would just be because the gerbils running in the wheels that power the internet had run out of food. Get them more food - problem solved.

Not to derail the thread but i always wondered what the world would be like with out any currency, if nothing had a value beyond its "usable" value.

Brandon and I both agree that the world would be entirely different. But I, after some serious adjusting, would rejoice. Helloooo, real intelligence!

-No more self proclaimed medical experts or newly found hypochondriacs who spend too much time on WebMD.
-No more Wikipedia historians.

It would be nice to see some research involve a little more than www.google.com

I think I'm getting old.

Re: What if the internet died...and never came back

On an economic stand point it would cause horrible problems. So much is conducted through Ecommerce. It would also destroy businesses that are brick and mortar left and right. Crap, it would be a problem for gov't as well. Email facilitates business everywhere. If I had to rely on calling people, running over to them or snail mail on everything it would probably take me 2-3 times longer to get things accomplished.

I don't like Ebay, but I'll admit it and Amazon are my bro's. The 'bay takes care of my old film camera hobby (80% of my gear I buy through Ebay) and Amazon takes care of my "there is just no way I can find it locally/cheaply" needs.

Re: What if the internet died...and never came back

Well....when the internet and the computers came along, everyone said that they would put a ton of people out of work.

Well, can you just imagine the number of people that would lose their jobs if the internet went for a ship.....

The economy would collapse and I mean that beyond money being gone. Barter makes life much harder. Ever had to carry a car's worth of barter goods to a dealership to get a car? Loans wouldn't likely exist. Afterall, what do you say "You owe me 4,000 chickens, 100 cows and 10 ipods for that lexus?"

Money was one of the most important 'inventions' that helped the world progress to the point that it has.
