Buying a laptop next month: MacBook Pro (MBP) or MacBook Air (MBA)?

I plan to buy a laptop next month, either a 13" Macbook Pro or a Macbook Air. (Security, please escort all Windoze fanboys off the Bridge.) This would mainly be used for Internet access; there would also be some very light Office use (simple Word and Excel documents), and some photo (i.e. pulling pics off the digital camera) and mild video viewing.

The Pro would be overkill for these tasks; I don't need a replacement for my desktop computer. Additionally, the Air's lightness isn't trivial, as this is of course for on-the-go usage. And let's not forget the Air's "coolness" factor OTOH, the Engineer in me insists on the Pro, since it offers so much more for the same money. And while the Pro isn't the lightest machine ever, it isn't made of lead, either.

Configured the way I want, each would cost roughly the same. (Or I can get a more bare-bones 13" Pro and save myself some cash. Though I am coveting the SSD option on the Pro, which is standard on the higher-end Air.)

Thoughts?

PS: Probably a good idea to wait until next month...

The Air is a waste of money.  I'm not a Windows fan necessarily, in fact I'm a recent Linux convert.

All Macs are overkill if you are not doing serious media processing.  If you want web, light video, light office stuff I would vote for Netbook.

You should wait for the nvidia Ion setups on Netbooks.  Specifically the Lenovo Ideapads.  Supposed to change laptops forever.  Cheap and super fast with HD capabilities.

EDIT: With Macs you pay for sex appeal, and some like to pay alot for sex.

eh...I've only heard rumors. I think I read that they are supposed to be out now if not soon. Me thinks its one of those situations where they keep pushing back the release dates. I'll look around though because I'm curious as well.

If you do anything besides internet and email, macbook air is a HUGE waste of money. Mac book air is a huge waste of money anyway. Do yourself a favor and just get the pro.
If you push the air at all the fans are so weak they don;t do anything, then you just run into overheating a few months down the road.

http://gizmodo.com/5341846/nvidia-io...ndows-7-launch

This article from Aug 20 2009 says end of october around Windows 7 launch.

So I guess it also depends on how much you are opposed to Windows.

I've had a MacBook Air for about a year now and it's great! I only paid $1049 from MacMall too. Whatever you do, don't buy it from an Apple store. Buy here: http://macmall.com/n/macNavLinks-macNavLinks.221 I recommend the 128 GB with Solid-State Drive.

I'm so happy with the MBA. The size, features, portability, styling, lighted keyboard, integration of its features (so seamless). I take my MBA everywhere and am on it all the time. It's held up wonderfully.

Those who are so against the MBA obviously do not have any real-world experience with it.

not saying MBA it sucks. Just saying paying over $1000 for abilities that you can buy for half that price is a little steep.
