Drinking Age

Saw this article on CNN and it got me thinking.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/09/...age/index.html

I've never supported having the drinking age lowered. The only good reason I've ever heard for lowering the drinking age is "if you can fight a war at 18, you can have a beer." I've always agreed with this and felt that an 18 year old should be able to get alcohol if they are in the military and have a military ID with them. The problem I see with that is you have the potential for these 18 yr olds to buy for other 18 yr olds more readily than someone older buying for an 18 yr old.

To me lowering the drinking age is like saying "why fight it?" Its accepting the fact that 18 yr olds drink anyways so we might as well let them do so legally. I've never liked this attitude and so I think the drinking age should stay where its at.

Re: Drinking Age

There are good arguments on both sides of this debate. For one, despite only being a few years, a person usually does mature quite a bit from 18 to 21. Second, like you said, I don't care if people do something anyways, the law doesn't have to bend just because it's not 100% successful.

On the other side, there are always some benefits of bringing an illicit activity into the legal realm. Maybe the law could be changed to let 18 year olds buy beer to go and not let them sit at a bar all night.

Sorry, I'm 30 now and do not want to go sit around a bunch of 18 year olds when I hit the bars on Friday.

Re: Drinking Age

Lower it. At 18, we recognize them as adults. They can be tried as adults, are permitted to vote as adults and yes, they can be sent to their deaths on the front lines of any war we currently get into. To keep it at 18 is nothing short of age discrimination. As for the bars, they are still privately owned the last time I checked and are permitted to deny a person entrance based on their appearance and age, as many do. Some places I know require that you be 25 to enter.

I'm 34 and feel exactly the same way but I am sure those 18 year olds do not want to hang out with you and I either. I'm more than certain that there are many establishments that would not mind accepting these young adults and many more that will refuse them.

Re: Drinking Age

Lets face it, those 18-21 year olds are drinking anyway. Might as well make it legal and be sure to educate them on the problems and dangers. But let them make their own choice.

+1 on bars having age limits above and beyond the drinking age. Here the drinking age is 19, but many bars have a 21+ or 25+ only policy. Allows them to cater to a clientele of their choice.

Maybe you're old at 30 but I'm pretty young at 34.

Re: Drinking Age

LOL, I'm "only" 23, and I don't want to be around 18 year olds at bars either.

Although....this would make it easier to bag a high school chick.

Re: Drinking Age

I feel like the attitude of "they drink anyways, make it legal and educate them" will continue with younger and younger ages. Eventually we will say the same thing about 15 and 16 yr olds.

18 is still high school age. When I was 18 I knew more 16 and 17 yr olds than 21 yr olds. Its not much of a stretch to say that there will be more people under the age of 18 will start drinking because of their proximity to people who can buy and provide alcohol.

BTW I did not have my first drink until I was 21 years old. Cookie for the straight-edge!

I'm 24 in october and I'm starting to be irritated by college kids already :/ and i won't get into my opinion on high schoolers
