Worst Drivers Poll & Gripes

Okay, so I have to vent a little here. I've just moved to Florida with my wife and I've noticed a very disturbing trend here. People in Florida don't know how to drive a vehicle. Coming here from Brooklyn, New York, I thought I'd be getting a much more civil, perhaps more laid back approach to driving. Not so much. I've also driven in the Dominican Republic which is a 3rd world country and has far too few cops to police the minuscule traffic laws in effect there. But I have to say, people on average drive better in the DR than they do in Florida. Florida drivers seem to take 4 lanes at one time without a signal, run through red lights at busy intersects, cut you off and then get mad at you for being there. Not to pat myself on the back, but I consider myself an excellent driver. Being that I have driven in many different places I also feel I have a good perspective on the ability of drivers in different places. I've driven in New York City, Chicago, New Jersey, Santo Domingo Dominican Rep., Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, North Virginia, Baltimore, and some others I can't remember. Living and growing up in New York it was always know to me that New Jersey drivers where the worst. I have to say, Florida drivers win at the worst drivers contest hands down. I almost want to get a job as a the person who administers a driving test so that more idiots are not getting on the roads down here. Please share your thoughts and opinions, these are mine and I hope they don't affend, it's just my point of view.

Re: Worst Drivers Poll & Gripes

well, i know ohioans are pretty bad drivers in general. every once in a while, it will appear as if actual water is falling directly from the sky. from the sky i tell you!! now, i can understand that this could be cause for some concern, but people here freak OUT and don't have a clue how to handle it. they start driving like it's a damn blizzard and slow to a crawl. drives me crazy. also, they do NOT know how to merge into traffic. this concept completely alludes them. as far as i can tell, they think that it's best to go a solid 20 mph UNDER the speed limit in an attempt to seamlessly integrate to flowing traffic. boggles my mind

Re: Worst Drivers Poll & Gripes

Socal people (sorry for singling you guys out) can't drive. They have two speeds, floor it and stomp on the brakes. They don't look ahead for example, say a block away while keeping an eye on the traffic right in front of them. I think that's why there are far less manual cars in socal too.

They would floor it, even though there's a stop sign at the next block and stomp on the brakes... So many times where I sat in my friends' cars and I go home with minor neck pain...

"You didn't know there's a light/stop sign on the next block?"
"No I don't look that far"

[/quote]your flaw in this is that the majority of Floridian drivers hail from other locales... Go find a real floridan and you won't...

most here in Tampa bay area are from NY/NJ and Ohio...

Re: Worst Drivers Poll & Gripes

I lived in New England for a season, and I actually liked the drivers there more than I do where I live now (SC Kansas). Drivers in NE drive a lot faster and have somewhat an appreciation for the fact that you have to be more aware when you're driving at 85-90 mph. People in Kansas are much more ignorant of others around them, and many more have a propensity to be rude in more situations. My parents asked me: "How's the driving there [New England]?" I told them I was totally comfortable because everyone drives like I do.

A better question is "where are the best drivers". Seems many think where they live the drivers are the worst because they deal with the same challenges day to day.

Good call-out on FL. I was born and raised in FL and was the minority. WA drivers suck as they were never taught the concept of "slower traffic keep right" (truth, its not taught here). Atlanta drivers are the best IMO. They go fast and keep to the right. It's always such a pleasure to drive when I go back to visit (unless it's rush hour).

Re: Worst Drivers Poll & Gripes

I say Puerto Rico is the worst...

Only place i've been to that will have a 1.5 lane mountain road with drivers 2 across at 60mph passing each other in the twists.

Only place i see where 3 lanes of interstate means 5 lanes of actual driving (on each shoulder).

Only place where potholes at 50mph will send you airborne 5 feet up.

If you don't get out of work at 2pm, you are stuck in traffic for hours... Also, you will get to work at 10am due to the traffic.

Only place i'm warned to not cuss other drivers out as instead of a finger, you get a handgun blast back at you.

HOWEVER!!!! you can do a rolling stop at red lights at night and blow past them without stopping.
