Is it possible to define yourself

Ok, we all have an image of who we want to be, what we want others to think of when they think of us.

My question is....is it possible to truly define yourself by yourself. In other words, is it what others think of you that makes you...you...or can you have a perfect self image regardless of what others think of you

Which is the "true" you...the you in your mind...or the sum total of all the other you's in eveyone elses mind?

weird i know...but whatever...we will see if it goes anywhere

Re: Is it possible to define yourself

I don't think its possible to define ones self. You can probably get pretty close. But in the end you will say what you want to think you are like, not what you are truly like.

yea thats what i think...you can say what you are all you want...but in the end you really are whatever others define you as...maybe thats why humans have such a pack instinct...cause we need each other to define ourselves

and i don't care how much people say they don't care what others think, but when it comes down to it, everyone cares what the people around them think of them.

agreed

i perceive it as humans are a compilation of their surroundings as they live on; you take a little bit of everything you do, experience, want, friends, adults, etc. I believe it is impossible to define "you" or anyone for that matter because everyone is constantly changing a little bit every minute, taking on new things. No one is the same, and no one is the same as they were the previous day, week, or year. They may think they haven't changed but there mind is constantly evolving and changing creating slightly revised reactions to new actions based on previous experience; it's our learning function at its best.

Re: Is it possible to define yourself

you define yourself by your actions and words.
it cannot be avoided, nor should you be confused by other people's perception of who you are.
you are what you do.

Re: Is it possible to define yourself

if i hear one more person tell me to stop acting like i'm black i'm gonna hit them. People don't seem to understand your dialect and speech is a product of your environment. If you're from the south, you're going to talk like a southerner, if you're from england you're going to talk like an Englishman, if you're from the city, you're going to talk like a city person, it's not talking "black" even if there happen to be a lot of black people in the city.....

Re: Is it possible to define yourself

you are what you are regardless of your own self image or other peoples perceptions of you.

no matter how close somebody knows you, they only know what you have allowed yourself to show them.

no matter how well you know yourself, you are capable of surprising yourself.

it's like John said, your actions and words, or maybe even closer your principles and your will that define who you are.
