Cats smell though. Any girl on her rag will know instantaneously. (seriously) Besides that, they pee & poop in litterboxes. In the same space you use for it and food dishes, you can have an aquarium FTW.

There's all kinds of shit you can put in a freshwater tank and it's minimal maintenance. You can build a canister filter that will handle a 150 gallon tank for 1/4 the price as a new one, too.

I just picked up a 55 gallon tank with a sump filter for $65 and built a stand for $20 out of 2 x 4.

Examples of fishies that will impress teh ladiez:

Spotted Raphael Catfish:
(You can pick them up and hold them and they won't move... but they will hide during the day if they can find somewhere to wedge themselves.)

Striped Raphael:

Zebra Pleco:

Queen Arabesque Pleco:

Common Pleco:

Opal Spot Pleco [Ancistrini sp. (L082)]:

Various Guppy:

Glass Catfish:

Banjo Catfish:
(They let you pick them up as well)

African Butterfly Fish:

Veiled Marble Angelfish (or Angelfish in general):

Hillstream Loach:

Khuli Loach:

African Dwarf Frog:

Red Phantom Tetra:

Neon Tetra:

Koi Carp:

Glofish (Genetically modified Danio):

Re: Pet for College Apartment

... Ferrets smell, even after you pay to have their glands removed. They're very high maintenance and do not belong in a college environment at all. Reptiles are a pain, too, since you have to clean the terrarium often and monitor conditions closely. Sometimes, you even have to prepare food.

I dunno, if you're not getting something cuddly, I can only see an aquarium being an option.

Re: Pet for College Apartment

Fish or reptiles are your only option. You really, really don't want anything else. Remember, maintenance people, etc. can come into your apartment when you're not home. Having them find a ferret, dog or a cat = FTL. Make sure you read your lease and see what the fine is for having an unauthorized pet before you do anything. Some places it's $50+ a day.
