New Computer Time: Need Insight

Well I use to have both a desktop and a laptop. But my laptop was new at the time and far exceeded the performance of my desktop so I rid of the desktop.

Now my laptop is 3 years old, which really isn't that old to me, but I know in computer years and technology it is. For the past 6 months now I have contemplated about getting a new laptop but have put it off because this laptop still performes better then my mother and fathers computers both of which are less then 6 months old.

So recently I got back into playing Flight Simulator, or in my case, Flight Simulator X. Well my laptop cannot quite handle the graphic load of the game. Plus the battery no longer holds a charge and it doesn't even have a built in webcam.

So I have thought about getting either a newer slightly better laptop that can handle the game and everyday use, or just buy a new lone tower that I can hook up to my tv.

My current system specs for my laptop are:

1.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
1 GB of Ram
ATI Radeon X1300 Mobility Integrated Graphics Card

Both of which I think my Ram and Graphics Card are holding me up.

So if I were to get a new laptop, I would probably just get a laptop with 4 GBs of RAM, and an integrated 1902 shared memory graphics card. Like in this laptop that I like a lot:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...amp;CatId=1902

Not much of a CPU upgrade, but I think the RAM upgrade will help, and plus it has a 17" screen and numeric keypad and a built in webcam which are things I would like.

The only problem with this laptop is that it shares its graphic memory with the RAM I believe which while yeah I have 4 GB of ram to share, it still means sharing.

Meanwhile with a tower I could have a dedicated graphics card and still have great performance. However I plan on purchasing a home soon and really do not want to get stuck with putting this tower near my tv in my home, and I really don't feel the need for two seperate computers when I could just upgrade my laptop.

So do you think the laptop that I chose on tigerdirect is of decent performance to do what I wish, or should I find a powerful tower to do the task.

If you think I should get a tower can you please post a link to one that you would find reasonable. However my budget for a tower is less then a laptop. While I would spend $600 on a laptop, I think I do not want to spend more then $450 on a tower. So please show only towers under that price please.

I mean no hard feelings for what I post on this website. Anything I type/write/post/say on this forum is only that of general debate and discussion. I am not biased toward anyone or anything. I am neutral in everything I do on this website. Only those facts that are presented to me sway my thought process and siding of each discussion topic that I post about.

Re: New Computer Time: Need Insight

Why is your budget less for a tower?

I don't think RAM is going to help you much as far as performance, especially if you are looking to play Flight Sim. It will help a bit but you are right about your graphics card holding you back.

I would say build your own but that is definitely out of the $450 budget.

For $450 its going to be kinda hard got build a decent gaming rig. For a $600 you can build a decent one. Toms hardware does a budget build every few months

Check this out. As far as gaming on a budget laptop, you might be out of luck.

Re: New Computer Time: Need Insight

i would suggest just go to some computer store and things like best buy and just ask.
i mean, now our days there are no need to build ur pc urself, it is a lot of hustle for nothing much more.
i have built all my computers up to now. and i just bought a gaming laptop, for cheaper that it would have been if i had to build it myself.
go to a real store and ask... just my 2cents!

i can't help but wonder what kind of POS computer did your parents get 6 mo ago that is out performed by that, but i digress...

if you want to get the most bang for your buck, get a desktop. dell has lots in the outlet (refurb, scratch/dent, canceled orders) from which to choose. i am inclined to agree with eurotuner regarding building your own. my cousin built one recently and admitted he did not save any money. but he did it just cause he wanted to build it. the key is to get your money together, do some research for the current prices, then hit the weekly sales ads.

frys, best buy, newegg.com, dell.com, etc... the more time you research = the more money you save.

it's fun to do bad things

Well my father got some tower of QVC. QVC has nothing special so no surprise there. But I built my mothers laptop on Dell.com and I believe it has a 2.2 GHz processor with 2GB of ram. I think what is holding it up is Vista. It runs so slow I want to throw it out a window. I run my computer off of XP and keep background task to a minimum and do maintenance to it daily so that is why my computer out performs theres.

A pop up comes up on my mothers screen and she thinks she is getting hacked, there is no helping her.

Re: New Computer Time: Need Insight

Alienware is the way to go if you want to build a nice gaming computer. But the prices are a little higher than you wish to spend. I think your target price range is low for what you want. If you want just a normal, I can check email, go to M3F and get all the porn in the world, then your price range is fine. But if you want a decent gaming PC/Laptop, then you need to fork out the money for it!
