My Laptop is Toast...Need Help!

Where better to look for help than my local, friendly Mazda3 Owner Community!

Anyway, my 3 year old HP Pavillion's motherboard is on the fritz, first the WLAN card stopped working and EVENTUALLY the motherboard was replaced. Now that my laptop is a week or so out of warrantee, my computer doesn't really want to turn on. It just beeps and I'm left with a blank screen and the cooling fan running...no thinking or anything.

So I'm looking for suggestions for a new laptop. Unfortunatelly, I'm still in school and need the portability so a desktop is out of the question (even though they tend to be more reliable and easier to fix). I'd like to spend no more than $1,000 and don't want another HP.

I found a Toshiba that I really like that isn't too expensive, the Satellite A505-S6960 for $719.99. I don't like that it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card (granted, I rarely do any gaming or anything) and I really haven't heard much about Toshiba's and how reliable/durable they are. FWIW, consumers who reviewed it on the Toshiba website seem to really like them.

Also I was looking at the Dell Inspiron 15, but I'm not sure how Dell's are these days. I kind of view them as Hyundais...at first they were terrible, but now they seem to last longer and are of better quality.

Is there anything else I should look into?

Re: My Laptop is Toast...Need Help!

i do not think your laptop is broken. if you say it beeps when you turn it on it should be a memory. try resetting the memory or if you have two memory in the memory banks try using one and turn it on if it does not turn on try the other one. One of the memory should be bad or it just need to be put in place properly.

I tried that actually. I reseatted both memory and that didn't work. I got so frustrated with it I took it to a local computer repair shop and they tried putting different memory in, among other things, with no luck.

Re: My Laptop is Toast...Need Help!

My three year dell is still going. I had a minor screen issue when it was 8 months old, which i got replaced by warranty. I had to replace both the battery and the ac adaptor, but other than that its been good. Oh and the hard drive, but thats my fault for not carrying it properly. Now I have a larger hard drive for it

I dont know what programs and such you need to run on your computer, but Apple is still running this little deal. You can also get a free printer with that purchase I believe.

Buy all the replacement laptop parts you need. I just built an entire laptop from parts on this site. Saved me a bundle.

Re: My Laptop is Toast...Need Help!

My Toshiba Satellite A135-7403 has a very annoying ethernet card problem that myself and about a dozen other technicians haven't been able to solve. So now it's a nice word processor/brick. Granted, it was a Black Friday special for $212, so I guess I got my money's worth ($106/yr?)

My HP Pavilion zv6000 is 5 years old and still truckin'. A little slow by today's standards, but it works fine other than the battery is shot and the "F" key sticks.

My sister's Sony Vaio (don't know the model number) is 2 1/2 years old I think? (She got it when Vista was first available in stores and all the XP computers were gone...they found the Vaio in the back room, about to be shipped back). The OS (Win XP Media Center Edition SP3) decided to implode one day and the computer wouldn't boot the OS (luckily I backed up all her stuff a week before). Unfortunately, she had a project on there that wasn't backed up that she needed, but luckily again, I just bought a SATA/PATA to USB hard drive adapter, so I pulled the HDD and copied everything. Wasn't willing to go look for it cuz she has too many random/misc/other/unsorted/stuff named folders. Installed Win XP Pro SP3 and it's been fine since. Moral of the story? Back up your shit!

The new Dell Inspiron 13 I got has been fine so far, but I don't use it except for taking notes and browsing the Internet at school. With the extended-life battery, it's literally as heavy as a brick, but it gets 7 hours of battery life using a modified High Contrast theme.
