The Healthcare Thread

Let's use this thread to discuss the current health care issues and debate...

I realize that nationalized health care is not exactly what Obama is suggestiing right now...but we know it's in the works...

Since canadaians have to come to the US for services and treatments not available in Canada...where would US citizens go under such a program?

I don't follow it too closely but I have been interested to learn more. The last I heard was the Obama admin is reacting to the public's discontent by dissolving the idea slowly. This was on NJ 101.5 news a couple of days ago..

Have you even been paying attention to what's going on?  The insurance corporations own the dems just like they do the repubs.  Hell even the piddly "public option" doesn't look like it going to happen now.  Repubs will do all that's in their power to kill it, and the dems are too big of pussies to do anything without them, even though they have the power to do whatever they want.  Health care reform my ass, nothing is going to change.  So everyone who's scared that the current shitty system is going to be fixed, don't worry.  You can keep getting ass-raped by for-profit healthcare corporations and go on about your merry way.

Here is an excellent summation of the current situation.

I realize that nationalized health care is not exactly what Obama is suggestiing right now...but we know it's in the works...

Since canadaians have to almost never come to the US for services and treatments not available in Canada...where would US citizens go under such a program?

Fixed it for you.

That crap is simply hyped by opponents of a nationalized health care system. In this case, sure it would be a small move towards a nationalized health care system, but no one is proposing (seriously) removing private health insurance. Basically what the plan boils down to is mandating health coverage, if you can't afford it a public option would be available to you at a deeply discounted rate, similar to merging medicare/medicaid without an age requirement and with the premiums/co-pays.

Most of the crap you hear about it is disinformation from the insurance industry and/or republicans. Hell Steele is pretty up there in spreading disinformation (such as lately refusing to acknowledge that the 'death panel' claims are patently false).

Re: The Healthcare Thread

The whole situation is just stupid. People are worried about the "cost" of healthcare reform, but they don't realize the ACTUAL COST of medicare/medicaid/private insurance is going to go through the roof in the next 20 years. Don't want to fund 1 trillion for national healthcare reform? OK, enjoy your current insurance when it triples in price.

My own mother pays $400 a month for basic blue cross/blue shield and they raised their prices 22% just like that. I just laugh and laugh. She is 100% against national healthcare and doesn't realize she's driving herself to ruin.

Thankfully I work for a hospital. Cheapo health care for me!

it's a given that there's lots of disinformation out there...thanks for that, but I don't think it's a uncommon as you think, nor is it that uncommon for canadians with serious health issues to die while waiting for treatment. Is it a serious flaw? I suppose that depends on whether you or somebody you know died while queing for treatment.

Re: The Healthcare Thread

as a fellow canadiana, it is true the wait times for certain things can be much longer than they should and it's something that hits me close to home.

am i unhappy with it, yes and no. My father has undergone numerous eye surgeries in the last few months which he would not be able to afford if we were in the states.

Re: The Healthcare Thread

So most medical care for all or all medical care for a few?

I go for the former.

Which ruins the country more, private health insurance cost tripling, or the total collapse of the dollar (which WILL happen if we take on such a massive unfunded liability). We're already screwed enough with Medicare and Social Security, the last thing we need is another huge debt that will blow up in our faces. If national health care passes, I'm buying gold, lots of it.
