Why can't people use seatbelts???

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/08/10/cal...ash/index.html

This is horrible that it happened, but I blame the driver of the pickup just as much as the Neon that blew the stop sign. No idea on the whole scenario, so I can't really say that I blame the police at all.

Seriously, 4 of the 5 ejected from the pickup (or possibly all 5, hard to tell from what the article says). No way any of them would be ejected if they were in a car seat (new guidance says car/booster seat until they are aged 8 and 75lbs). Plus, the most seating I know of is 5 seats in an extended cab (maybe some have 3 in front for 6 total, but still, putting little kids in the front seat!). That means at least 1 more child then seats in that pickup.

I've seen to many pickups (especially) with little kids just standing around on the back seats, not even belted in let alone in a car seat. Seems to only really occur with a certain group.

It just sickens me.

Re: Why can't people use seatbelts???

It is truly horrible.

I see it on a daily basis. Children under the age of 10 who should be belted or in a car seat, just free roaming around the car while it is in motion. It is highly unacceptable and the parents always receive a summons. There is no excuse what so ever to not have your child in a seat and properly belted.

Most of the parents simply do not care though, because they have the car seat, they are just to lazy to put the kid in it.

I mean no hard feelings for what I post on this website. Anything I type/write/post/say on this forum is only that of general debate and discussion. I am not biased toward anyone or anything. I am neutral in everything I do on this website. Only those facts that are presented to me sway my thought process and siding of each discussion topic that I post about.

Wow, that is absolutely horrible. I agree 100% with you guys; it is completely unacceptable to not have your child properly fastened in.

Unfortunately this is a frequent occurrence in the border states. 7 or 8 people in a 5 passenger car, kids running around the back seat, etc. They're trying to crack down on unrestrained children around here, hopefully it starts yielding some results.

I think it should be instantaneous jail time and revocation of custody rights for a min. of 6 months while the offender's mental capacity is evaluated. If proven to be a window-licking country-bumpkin socially-inept irresponsible retard like the example given, they should be sterilized. Lastly, an orphan should get to cane them.

But that's just one idea.

Re: Why can't people use seatbelts???

I think your idea could hold some merit.

I personally think the no-seatbelt and no-childseat tickets aren't nearly stiff enough. I think they should be up there with a DIU ticket in severity. Especially if the kid should be in a child seat and isn't (IE very young children). Maybe if your an adult or driver of the vehicle and you choose not to wear a seatbelt (still should get a ticket, just not as bad). However, if your a kid...frankly you have no free will. If your parent tells you to buckle up or use the car seat, that fricken happens. I don't know a single person who's kid doesn't either wear a seatbelt or stay in their booster/child seat...even EXTREMELY lippy/wild kids do that in the car (wear a seatbelt/stay in a carseat).

Re: Why can't people use seatbelts???

The saddest part is even if you show these idiots the demostrations showing passengers being flung about unbelted, I seriously doubt it would change anything :x

So innocent kids die because their parents / guardians have all the common sense of a rock

(I will issue the following caveat however, when I was very young (9 or so) I traveled with a bunch of friends in the back of a moving van to a birthday party, it was loads of fun at the time flailing about, but looking back on it, criminally stupid for the adults supervising us to do it)

Re: Why can't people use seatbelts???

Hell, when I was a kid they still made bassinet seats for infants in cars. That way you could lay them down in it in the car. Real safe there. My parents generation seat belt use was a funny suggestion.

That doesn't mean any of it was safe or make you a horrible person or your parents for not wearing one. Society was different as was the acknowledgement that sealt belt use needed to be mandatory. Heck, 50 years ago most people knew cigarettes weren't really that great, but no one thought about it and few cared. Now most people realize cigarettes are horrible for you. Society changes.

Frankly I think if you are in a car accident and your child was not in a car seat or belted in when they were supposed to be I think you need to be charged with child neglect. If you were killed I think it should be upgraded to involuntary or even voluntary manslaughter (especially if it can be shown that they died as a result of not having worn a seatbelt/car seat).

Re: Why can't people use seatbelts???

I am so programmed to get in the car and put my belt on, I do it without even thinking. I seriously think about every other step I do when I get into the drivers seat, key in the ignition, foot on brake, put car in reverse, etc... but I NEVER think about the belt, it's just always on almost like it does it itself.

Yet somehow, I know many people younger then me (I'm 25) who "forget" to do it. My brother, who is about half my age, always "forgets" about it. Grew up in the same house, with the same parents, who always wear their belts... why he can't remember something so simple is beyond me.

As for parents who don't properly restrain their children, they should have their kids taken away and their license revoked. There is no excuse for it at all.

My kids (when I have them) are going to be properly locked in and then wrapped in bubble wrap
