Just Ordered All the Parts for new Computer

The new build for QuakeCon.

MSI x58 Platinum
Core i7 920
ThermalTake Hyper N520 Cooler
12 Gb OCZ Gold Series DDR3 - 12800
XFX Radeon HD 4890 1Gb
Some random optical drive
WD Raptor
250 Gb WD SATA beater drive
700watt PSU
(Case pics coming soon) Lian-Li PC7

Should get up and go okay. Hopefully I'll be able to overclock the crap outta that processor. Stock is 2.66 I'm shooting for 4. I hand picked a D0 based Core i7, so I *should* be able to hit 4 without much issue.

Opinions, please!

What are you going to do with all that power? Global domination?

"Beater drive?" Is that like a winter beater, or is it just a place to store porn?

Re: Just Ordered All the Parts for new Computer

Yeah, global domination. Totally! :-P

Naw, I always do a new build with top of the line crap every other year. I had a computer 7 years ago that owned QIII.

Total spent was like $850, not too bad.

SSD is nice, but a 10k raptor is just fine. A beater drive is for downloaded crap, ISO's music, etc. Programs get installed on the Raptor.

I have absolutely 0 intentions of turbo'ing my car . . . ever.

Re: Just Ordered All the Parts for new Computer

id turbo my car if i had the cash. I try to upgrade the computer every few years or so. That seems to be my going rate currently. I dont really care for uber high end, just so i can play the games i like, at near max settings. I run cod4 great, wow great, mirrors edge. All basically max settings, computer was put together over a year ago. I dont think ill upgrade it any time soon. Id rather get a new laptop first to be honest.

Re: Just Ordered All the Parts for new Computer

I would highly suggest the SSD. Intel has new SSDs coming out that are pretty cheap. $230 for 80 gigs. That can't be that much of a difference in price from the raptor. It's worth it. They also support TRIM, which will be supported by Windows 7 and makes them even faster.

Did you get a raptor 150 or 300? Just built my workstation using a 150 GB sata, for the price of the 300 GB you can get the 150 GB plus a 1 TB storage drive.

Re: Just Ordered All the Parts for new Computer

I'd really like to upgrade my laptop to something bigger and better. Stuck with a Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop.

Would like to get a refurbished HP DV7 Series like I think its a 17" screen with webcam and mic built in and what not.

Saving for a house sucks.
