Deciding on a major...

Well, I have no clue what I want to major in. Ive been thinking of engineering(network or mechanical engineer) or going into law. I love engineering, but I hate math if that makes sense. And law seems like it would keep you on you on your toes. Anyways, I was seeing if anyone on here could shed some light on either career paths!

Re: Deciding on a major...

if its your first year, majors dont really matter....all the basic courses are the same, math, language, etc....take one or two course to try out the majors...one intro to law, one engineering, as electives the first year....then you will probably have a better idea where to go....

1/2 know what field they want, and go do it...

the other 1/2 arent 100% sure and bounce around majors the first couple years....

just go undeclared for the first year, and see what happens...

Re: Deciding on a major...

I changed majors 5 times... don't stress about it too much.

I went into college my first year as a Marine Biology major. Then it changed to just Biology. Then it was Computer Engineering. Then it was Computer Science. I ended up as an Information Sciences and Technology major. I still have tons of Bio in my background because I took so many classes on it... but IST was what my Bachelor's was.

If this is your first year... take some things that interest you, such as a 100 level law class and a 100 level engineering class. If you're good at math, engineering is for you! There is a lot of math/physics involved, so if you like that stuff, go for it. I only took 2 law classes in college... they were fun and i learned a lot, but eh, not for me! :P

Good luck!!

All I have to say is that if you hate math, engineering is not for you especially mechanical engineering which is the most demanding of all.

I concur. There is so much math involved. I hated every minute of my engineering class.

Thanks for all of the replies guys!
Well, my highschool had a 4 year long engineering course and we won best in state in EVERY competion, but after taking some college math courses, it just sunk in how much I despise math lol.

Oh wow, that's awesome though!!

Well... if you don't like math now, you won't like it even MORE in college. ESPECIALLY if your professor hardly speaks English like how mine were! That's one of the things I hated most about college. I had very hard classes... and in those classes were professors from different countries (Bulgaria, China...). It was very hard to understand them... so I had to do a lot of self-teaching.

Re: Deciding on a major...

Take a bunch of different things to see what you like and beware teachers that don't speak english. Many schools will boast about having excellent professors from all over the world but that just means they have a bunch of teachers that can't communicate well.

Werd. I was a econ major. Never helped me much on the job, but it has helped me be better informed and better with building wealth.

Accounting is a good degree, too. Always in high demand. The actual "math" involved is fairly remedial, it's mainly about how it's applied. (Getting my masters in accounting at the moment).
