Not just in movies anymore!!!

you know how in the movies and on tv, something stops working, anything, a car, a lamp, a tv etc, etc, and you tap it a couple times, maybe hit hard with your fist, maybe even take a hammer to it, and it gets it back working?

only in the movies right?

Wrong.

lmao. the other day, i noticed that the light that lights up my AC selector knob (the one for face, feet, both etc) had gone out. SOoooo, yesterday, while I was in Fayetteville, I hit up Flow Mazda to see what the cost of that little bulb would be. they told me 10 bucks.

So I laughed and went home. When i got home, I pulled out my headunit and then the ashtray panel. I took out all the screws and proceeded to pull the panel for the HVAC controls out. IT didn't want to come, so I manned up and yanked it. Heard a snap and realized I had broken a couple of clips and still couldn't get it out. LOL

so I gave up and put everything back where it went. luckily the the broken clips didn't affect the way it sat in the dash. Later that night when I got in the car to head to my gf's house, I noticed that now, the light of the HVAC control on the left was working! but the one on the right side was out now! WTF!!!! didn't really know what to do about it so I said oh well.

That brings us to tonight. I'm at my gf's house and we are about to leave and get some food. I turn on the lights and all the HVAC control lights are out. the whole panel is pitch black. I say WTF!!!! I get tired of it and hit it. BAM.... the two lights that originally work come back on with the one on the right not working now. Then I hit that one fairly hard and it comes on!!!! Now all my lights work!

Moral of this story...

hitting things to make them work is not a Hollywood trick. It works. Next time something in your car isn't working, hit it!

Re: Not just in movies anymore!!!

My old ranger had a problem like that. The headlight dimmer switch kept melting and would cause the headlights to turn off.... this was of course inconvenient while driving at night. I replaced the module a few times and it still kept crapping out. As a stop gap I installed a good set of aux. driving lights incase they went out. Usually when they turned off I could just give the steering column a smack and they'd come back on.

It was actually hilarious. My sister was borrowing my truck to move some stuff for an art show and on the way home on the highway in Richmond the lights turned off. She calls me and is frantically babbling about being stuck on the highway with no lights. So I'm like, "Okay, here's what you do. First calm down. Second hold up your left hand. Third ball it into a fist. Fourth smack the steering column." Between each of these instructions she's dutifully saying, "Okay, done". When I tell her to smack it there's a second of silence and I get a solid, "What?". So I repeat, "Just smack the column". I hear a thunk and then she's all happy, "Thanks, cool, talk to you later".

I ended up tracking the problem back to some corroded wiring in the headlight harness. Replaced that and never had it happen again.

In my old Chevette the dash lights never worked unless you smacked the top of the dash immediately after starting up the car.
