Why do Americans think hatchbacks are gay?

I am trying to comprehend why all of my american friends feel inclined to deem my hatchback as a "queer" car, whereas my european or ethnically diverse friends are fans of the hot hatches?

Recently I had an argument as to why hatches aren't gay and that people who buy sedans are just overcompensating for something
Points i brought up:
Bigger Engine - I think thats a big thing
More space - for whatever
European's are hatch crack heads and their culture is ages ahead of ours
There response however was that hatchbacks look gay... end of story...

Basically, I am just trying to understand someones mentality behind making such idiotic accusations.

Re: Why do Americans think hatchbacks are gay?

Just my 2 cents: I think SOME americans think down on hatches because when they first started appearing here in the 70s they were only available with "cheap" japanese imports like toyota and datsun while most americans where still driving detroit V8s. My dad bought a starlet and was constantly picked on about it by his coworkers. Some cars I do think of as girly: CRV, Miata, VW Cabriolet. We have a sedan, but I'd have no problem owning a hatch.

What engine do you have that makes it bigger than the engine that I have in my sedan?
