Re: "The Real Price of Gold"

Interesting article.

Nevada has been dealing with the pros/cons of this mining for a while. Latest case:

Re: "The Real Price of Gold"

Yeah it is pretty sickening the impact. Beyond the jelwery/wealth issues with gold, it is very useful in circuitry and electronics (some applications) as well as a few other applications outside of those areas. Of course as the article says, a relatively small minority is used outside of jewlery.

Asteroid mining anyone?

Re: "The Real Price of Gold"

I couldnt believe how much gold India acutally uses simply for vanity.

Re: "The Real Price of Gold"

I haven't looked into the diamond thing to much, but the amount of gold which is used has to be triple that of diamonds, least in industrial applications diamonds can be manufactured, unlike gold.

Unfortunately it doesn't suprise me. Not that it makes it particularly better, but at least a lot of the Gold used in the US is for industrial purposes rather then luxury goods, or at least a much, much greater precentage is used for that with US consumption.

i had no idea how rare this shit really is. when I read that in all human history only an estimated 161,000 tons have been mined I thought that had to be bullshit but its very true. apparently all the platinum in the world would fit in an average living room, so really strip mining for ANY precious metal takes a massive toll on the environment not just gold.

I am honestly disgusted after reading this article.

I don't know if I'd call it nothing, sounds pretty bad. Of course there's no such thing as "blood gold," so that says something about the severity of the situation.
