Valet stole my ipod...

At the banquet hall for my high school prom, if you drove your own car you HAD to get valet. It's been a week since prom and I just realized that the valet worker must have taken my ipod out of my arm rest compartment. My question is whether or not the banquet hall will give me compensation for it. This hall JUST opened so I figure they will because they don't want a bad reputation right off the bat, ya dig? What do you guys think I should do?

Re: Valet stole my ipod...

Since it has been a week, it will be hard to prove they took it.

Also most valet operations have a policy that you are responsible for anything in your vehicle. Unless you can prove the valet, and which one, stole it...your SOL. Of course if you can prove it call the police.

The couple of times I've had to deal with a valet I just throw anything I consider valuable in my glove box and lock it. That isn't 'proof' from using the key to open the glove box...but it is pretty damning if I come back and either find the glove box unlocked or even locked with something missing. Pretty hard for a manager to refute if a valuable was placed in a locked glove box when the only realistic thing that can open it is the key THEY have.

Before you accuse someone of theft, do you have absolute proof he took it? Was a friend in your car who might have borrowed it?

Make sure you cover all your bases before you accuse him of theft.

Yep, doubtful anything will be done.

Lesson learned to secure items in the future.

Mother fuckers...

This kind of stuff has happened to me before too.  Contact the manager of the banquet hall.
Go from there.

They will try to say that it is not their responsibility.  Fuck that....

When they give you a ticket they usually release their responsibility so you might have a problem there but if you play your cards right they might work something out for you.

The way I would handle it... is just find out who owns the valet first.  Then go from there... if they are separate entities put them against each other really point out how you are the victim ... im sure you know how to do this.

If they are the same company than you can come on a little stronger... and demand/threaten.  You know they are a new business and that this is not good for their reputation and they need to solve this problem...because it should be their problem and not yours.

One negative review...outlook...whatever you want to call it on a restaurant can be a big problem for a new company.  A story like yours written on a review...told by word of mouth etc can travel very fast and looks any company a lot of business.

EDIT:  Also as a note please verify that it is indeed lost...before you make any moves.  Ask all your friends... look everywhere in the car... in your room... in you jacket pockets if you were wearing a tux or something....check everywhere.  You dont want to look stupid when your mom or girlfriend finds its in your pants pocket and you went through all that for nothing

...is waiting for the next episode of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood....

Chances are they're not legally liable for anything you leave in the car. If you don't want it stolen, don't leave it in your car, simple as that.

Fortunately, disclaimers like those have zero legal standing. Just cause you say it doesn't make it true.

The valet probably doesn't even work for the banquet hall, rather just a parking company they contract with for special events.
