Computer geeks

I just got a new laptop and downgraded it from vista to xp but everytime i try to partition it and install the OS seperately the computer thinks that the partition where the OS is installed is also the partition for the programs. I want drive C to be my default drive. If i try to install a program it goes to the 15gb drive D partition where i wanted my windows folder to be at. I got partition magic and tried to do it through there but i think i did it wrong or something cause now it won't go pass the welcome screen. It stays blue with the wallpaper but that's not a problem since nothing is on it and i can re-format it again. How would i go about doing this? I need to get this laptop running for college and music and this is bugging me!

Re: Computer geeks

To reformat it, make sure your first boot device in BIOS is set to the optical drive. Then, pop the CD in the tray, restart the computer, and when the BIOS screen reads something like "Press Any Key to Boot From CD...", do it. Windows setup will let you reformat the hard drive and repartition it as part of the install process.

you don't get what i want. I know that. I did that like 3 times but when ever i do that, where ever the partition is for where i install the OS the computer thinks thats the partition i want to use by default for my programs. Basically it thinks i only got 1 drive and not 2 partitions. I want my OS to be on partition D while my programs are on partition C. Or vice versa.

Re: Computer geeks

Virtual partitions, eh? I used to go for that back in the days of less reliable hard drive tech, but the last time was at least 5 years ago now.

I'll see if I can figure it out, like I said it's been a while

Re: Computer geeks

Is ghosting a hard drive the same? I don't remember any of this computer stuff since i haven't done any of this shit in a while too. I did it maybe once on an old PC but other than that i never even bothered to remember this till now.

Re: Computer geeks

Got it: Run regedit, and go to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion

Edit that to the directory where you want the Program Files folder to go.

Really though, these days even most of us "computer geeks" don't bother with virtual partitions unless they're running a dual boot setup.

Re: Computer geeks

I want to do this so if i screw the windows folder up and need to re-format my shit i'll still have my data on the other partition and the most i'd have to do is re-install some applications. I'll try that after i re-format the laptop agian since it won't even start right now.
So basically:
Reformat
partition to c and d
once windows is installed go to regedit and do something in there once i look i'll have an idea or know exactly. Then everything should run smoothly (crossing fingers).

Re: Computer geeks

maybe you can do it with tweak ui? maybe...
http://aumha.org/a/powertoy.htm

ghosting (afaiac) refers to an automated process of loading an OS, (and applications and other customizations if desired) from a template or "image" of a machine that is configured the way you want it.
in a way, some of the time capsule back-up programs employ this.

Oh, I get it now. Windows Setup should ask you what partition you want to install the OS on if the HDD is already partitioned. So install the OS on the desired partition, then go back and use regedit (like Alec said) to change the default directory of the Program Files folder to the other partition.

Now, if it's just showing up as one partition, (since you said it acts like there is only one drive), you could try reformatting the HDD in Win Setup and repartitioning it, but I'm sure you've already tried that by now.
