To start out with I'm one of those guys that's always looking at the new shiny stuff, so even if I don't strictly need a new one I'm kind of looking right now. I tend to like multiple features in my watches which can make narrowing them down a little difficult... namely I like a white face, date, night visibility, and alarm(s), though a stop watch can be quite helpful at times.
I currently have two watches that I use pretty consistently. My main daily/work watch is a timex chrono alarm. It's a nifty little watch with a bunch of features including: white face (easy to read), indiglo with night setting (i.e. you can set it so any button push will turn on the light for five seconds... setting lasts eight hours), analog alarm, analog chronograph, date. It has the little glow in the dark paint that most watches have which of course does pretty much nothing after about an hour in the dark. I've had several versions of timex's alarm watch and sadly this isn't one of the better ones. The design of the bezel/control knob for the alarm set makes it difficult to pull the set knob out and the alarm doesn't really work consistently anymore. Also recently the 100ths dial and the second for the chrono no longer "zero" when reset... instead they go about two ticks to the left. Anyway the watch still works just fine, it's just annoying that some of the features I loved about the watch initially aren't working reliably anymore. Also it's my second of the same style after the alarm went wonky, and the crown came off the first one.
My other watch is a citizen eco-drive that I got on a cruise a couple of years ago. It's a solar powered watch so I'll never have to replace the battery in it. Aside from the solar poweredness and a date window the only other feature it has is the glow in the dark indicators.... still not great, but last about half the night so better than the timex. This is my dress watch for the most part, but sometimes becomes my "off-duty" watch as it's a little smaller/lighter.
Anyway a friend/coworker of mine got me thinking about luminox watches the other day. Basically swiss watches with tritium gas lamps installed in the indicators/hands, so they actively glow vs. having to be charged. It's not a technology unique to this company, these are just the ones I was looking at. After looking through their selection I even found several with analog alarms... a feature I really like, and which is somewhat difficult to find. The one I've vaguely looking at is their yachting series watch. Feature wise is boasts: a 10 minute countdown timer which then goes into a regular chrono, analog alarm, date, end of life indicator (lets you know when the battery will die), etc. The timer could be useful since I could turn it on when I get to a call (I'm a paramedic) and when it goes off it gives me an idea of how long I've been sitting around (we like to keep out scene times to 10 minutes or so).
So anyway any thoughts from members about this company. There aren't a lot of reviews online for luminox watches, and most of those are for their super low end semi-el'cheapo line of dive watches. Even those are polarized between the "It's crap", and "I love it and it's worked for 10-15 years perfectly" reviews. Obviously the luminox is pretty pricey (esp. since this is a new model) so horrible reliability would be a bad thing.
Oh here's pics of my current watches and the one I'm looking at.
