Redlight camera

We have had redlight cameras at "problem intersections" for a year or so. If your vehicle is photographed for a violation - you will receive a $100.00 fine in the mail, along with a code # that enables you to view the "offense" on the internet. A police traffic officer has viewed the video and determined if you should be ticketed. Seems reasonable to me - but so many people raise hell about these. How do you feel about them? Do you have them in your area? Are the procedures similar?

Re: Redlight camera

we have them in NYC. if caught, 3 pictures are sent to you to show your progression through the light.
better to get one of these than to get pulled over and wind up with points on your license.

Yeah they upped the fines like a bitch here in Cali.

But I think it's reseasonable to have them at busy intersections, I've seen some horrific crashes.

Re: Redlight camera

Red light cameras are not intended to make intersections any safer. They are revenue generators and nothing else! There are studies that show they actually create more accidents from motorists slamming on their brakes to not chance getting a ticket, and getting rear-ended. The city I live in has atleast 20 of these cameras, which they lease from a company for $7,000 per month per camera. If they really wanted to make the streets safer they could hire several more officers to watch for speeders and drivers on their cell phones (illegal here). I hate the damn things and no I've not been caught by one. (knock on wood)

Re: Redlight camera

We have red light cameras all over the place. I don't mind them at all, cuz I'm not one of those people who tries to beat the light all the time when I know there's no chance of getting through the intersection BEFORE the light turns red lol.
I just hate hate HATE freeway speed cameras! Oh man, AZ has had a hayday with these. The Sheriff in one county is totally removing them, cuz he thinks they're ridiculous. I wouldn't mind them so much if they weren't 5 miles apart from one another the whole stretch of freeway. It's no fun driving to the autox track once a month when I have to pass by those...

Yeah my dad and I noticed cameras all along the local I-481 the other day. We don't know what they're for, but they're definitely all along the highway about 2-3 miles apart.

2007 Mazda 3 S Sport 5-door, 2.3L ATX, Black Mica; Corksport SRI, CorkSport Exhaust, VCTS removal, Koni STR.T shocks, Racing Beat springs, Gram Lights T57-RC 18" wheels, Speedline blue wide angle heated mirrors

Have them here as well (WA State). WSP also has speed cameras on I-5 in construction zones.

They are revenue generators now, though that wasn't their original intention.

Studies do show an increased number of accidents at intersections when redlight cameras are installed, but they do also show a slightly reduce rate of severe injury and death at those interesections. Afterall, most accidents are now rear-end accidents rather then T-bones.
