flee from 18 wheelers!

Im sure everyone has a story like this, but I was on my way back from lunch today and I was heading down an onramp to a 4 lane highway. The onramp ends up in a lane that ends very soon and you have to merge. Usually, when bad things happen at a place like this someone is where you need to merge to and not letting you in.

This time, right as the onramps comes together with the highway, some 18 wheeler is actually merging INTO my lane that ends in 300 feet. I have to hit the brakes hard (in the rain) and zip in behind him to avoid being between the 18 wheeler and a concrete wall. No sooner than I am on the other side but hes blindly merging back as the lane he merged into is ending so I had to dodge him twice.

Yay for MS3 brakes, pickup, and good traction in wet weather! My HID headlights were on and my car is true red, dont tell me you didnt see it.

Truckers can be some of the worst f'in drivers. I stopped at a red light in my first car, a 89 ford bronco II. The fucker behind me never stopped and rear ended me. I had a few seconds before he hit me but i couldnt step on the gas and go cause traffic was moving infront of me. I watched him slam into me through my rearview and i got dr.pepper all over my self and my interior. The bronco held up like a champ though. Got away with a slightly bent bumper and a dent.

Dude, that's one of my biggest fears. Seeing a truck coming up behind you and knowing you'll be hit, but can't do anything about it. Ugh.

Glad you both are ok.

semis are the tools of the industrial devil

I never change my oil now that I'm boosted. Before I put on my stage 3, I had my engine teflon plated...it allows me to not use oil plus its guaranteed nonstick...

Ever notice how they become 10x more insane when it's raining? You'd think it'd be the other way around, but in a torrential downpour those guys are still driving balls-to-the-wall

Re: flee from 18 wheelers!

Facts about industrial trucks

1) They've got large blind spots - They may have genuine difficulty seeing you.
2) They generally don't tailgate - it takes them longer to stop. Also don't cut them off if traffic is slowing, they may not have the capacity to stop.
3) They don't accelerate rapidly - They won't be accelerating to block you off.

It's in everyone's best interest to get away from big rigs. I'm never comfortable when traffic is backed up and I'm driving in parallel with a truck.

His story basically implies that he yielded, he just had difficulty doing so.

Re: flee from 18 wheelers!

Trust me guys, as somebody who had to frequently direct traffic in an Amusement park parking lot, I can say with 100% certainty that Bus Drivers are far worse than semi drivers. I've seen busses full of kids do some absolutely amazing things. In contrast, I saw semi drivers fit their trucks into spaces the short busses wouldn't dare try.

If any of you are able to drive a semi in your lifetime, do it. My uncle owns a semi dealership and also runs a school for truck drivers. I had the opportunity to take advantage of a few training courses. I now have a lot more respect for truck drivers. I'm the jerk in front of you who let's semi's in when lanes are merging, lets them through when they are waiting at side streets, etc. My uncle had to drop a trailer off at another dealer once so I went with him. He literally keeps track of cars around him by their shadows because people drive so close. He told me at one point there were two cars behind him and I couldn't see one.
