man cured from AIDS (apparently)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081113/...HsLJmRWWms0NUE

No I dont think this is a fluke. The technology is there for us to do something like this. People say gene therapy is years/decades away, but that's not the case. We have the technology, it's done routinely in mice/rats. The only thing lacking is the actual human data. There are lines of lab animals carrying specific traits that biologists want. You want a hairless mice? You got it! Want an immunocompromised mice? You got it! Want to genetically engineer your own mice? You got it!

The world of GATTACA is not far from us. (Minus the profiling)

Is this approach practical though? Hell no, because of statistic. The CCR5 mutation is rare as it is, on top of that, the donor has to be a match for the patient who will be receiving the marrow. (1 in 1000)(1 in x) = good luck buddy!

This is merely a proof a concept. I hope more money will be poured into gene therapy and stem cells research.

Re: man cured from AIDS (apparently)

I have a close friend who works for the CDC and sometimes get an inside scoop on where things are at. According to him, we are a LONG way out from a cure. That being said, we never know what breakthrough is right around the corner.

It's sounding like our upcoming administration will allow for some types of stem cell research so hopefully we can make some progress towards saving lives.

I never change my oil now that I'm boosted. Before I put on my stage 3, I had my engine teflon plated...it allows me to not use oil plus its guaranteed nonstick...

The outgoing administration has "allowed" stem cell research, too. Just didn't fund it.

There was a report that came out earlier this year (I'll try to find it) that made a convincing case against even further pursuing a cure for AIDS as it diverts so much time, money and intellectual resources away from diseases that might actually be curable/treatable.

Have them take that technology down to africa so we can cure the source.

yeah they "allowed" it. And what was the catch? No new line could be generated, research could only be done on existing lines. And what's the problem with that? Those lines are 10+ years old. Stem cells is known to be genetically unstable after a long time and old stem cells are extremely hard to culture.

So much for "allowing" it.
