Where to get cheap furniture that doesn't look cheap?

I checked Ikea already. They're more expensive than I thought they were. The only good prices they had were on display items but they were pretty used up. Specifically, I'm looking for a futon, pull out bed couch, or a couch big enough to sleep on. Pricewise, I would prefer it to be no more than $300 (yes, I know, I'm asking for a miracle here). I checked online at Target, K-Mart, Costco, and Walmart. I'd like to weigh my options if anyone else has some suggestions.

first of all, i have yet to sleep on a comfortable sleeper sofa (the bar is always in your back) so rule that out.

The one in Grey is $249. There you go, under $300 and it is a pretty nice futon. I have one of them in my office, it is one of the more slip-covery ones (Enesbo Sand color, which apparently they don't make that color any more, or at least don't list it online, similar to the brown color they have, more of a tan/grey though). Its a fair bit more, but one with the slip cover like the Sandvik brown is very nice. Especially with a slip cover I wouldn't consider it cheap looking, modern maybe.

It is very comfortable. When I was single I probably spent half my nights sleeping on it in my living room instead of on my bed. It folds out in to a nice queen sized bed.

Yes you are asking for a miracle if you want to try to find something that cheap outside of Ikea.

As mentiond, check craigslist. Also, those off brand furniture stores near malls in suburbs, check there and remember you can negotiate on pricing.

I've been shopping Ikea for over 10 years and there prices have increased significantly over the years. It's no longer the deal (for the most part) that it used to be and there stuff (most of) looks cheap.

Nightsky, since you're in the Bay Area, have a look at Scandinavian Designs. You can find some great deals there. I've purchased a few big items from them over the years (as have my parents over the years) and their furniture lasts a long time, granted you take care of it.

For example, I was eyeing a nice sleigh bed at Z Gallerie, which was running about $700 at the time. I walked into Scandinavian Designs and found a nicer bed for right around $200. Not bad for a queen size.

What's with the Swedes making nice looking, well priced furniture? I can spend hours at an Ikea and still come back the next week...lol
Oh, and they make some damn good hockey players as well...

Re: Where to get cheap furniture that doesn't look cheap?

Dont get the black metal futon that they have at walmart! That thing sucks hardcore balls!! It creaks and cracks and is very uncomfortable. But hey.. for the 150.00 that I paid for it, I guess it wasnt all that bad. One of my buddies had an awesome futon but I think he said that his parents ended up paying like over a grand for the thing. I think furniture is way way way overpriced, thats prolly why a bunch of furniture places around here have been closing down.

The metal ones really only for occasional use and will start to bend after a while, had two people on an extended stay and by 2 weeks the bed started bending in the middle, it was from Ikea.

With that said this one looks good.
