iPhone and iPod Touch apps

I am purchasing an iPod Touch on Thursday and am wondering:

What apps would you guys recommend?

Any cool tips and tricks you'd like to share?

Pandora

There is a lot of discussion and recommendations in the iPhone 2.0 thread. You may want to skim it too but it's too big and full of conversation to really read it all. Well, I guess there are some good best practices and troubleshooting techniques too.

Car Care is a good one - 4.99 for gas mileage and service records

Shazam - Listens to music tells you the artist and song

White Pages, and YPmobile (yellow pages) are always good to have

Pandora, Wikiamo (wikipedia client in case that's not obvious), Sportacular, Urbanspoon, Google Earth, NYTimes...all good IMHO

Re: iPhone and iPod Touch apps

Wiki Tap is pretty incredible for a free app. Also, Simplify Media is a great free app that will let you stream all the music from your iTunes library to your iPhone or iPod Touch, so you have access to your whole library when you're on the go.

Also, here's a good tip. Browse the App Store on your computer... you can see more screen shots of the apps that way, rather than browsing them on the Touch. And read the reviews ppl have left for the paid apps before you decide to buy any. And also, there are TONS of good free apps there, too. If any free ones look good, go ahead and download them to your Touch... If you don't like them, just delete them. No money lost.

This is one of the great things Apple has going to give them an edge in the smartphone market. ONE place to visit to find all your apps. You don't have to do google search after google search to find apps (believe me, I've had a few smartphones in the past, and its frustrating... apps are scattered all over the place). It's much more convenient to get all your apps from just one place.

Re: iPhone and iPod Touch apps

Yes, I forgot about Simplify! Sure it's got limitations (the compression it adds is pretty bad), but just the fact that it exists is pretty damn awesome!

There's also AirSharing which allows you to map your iTouch as a network drive so you can drag and drop files. Music won't show up in the main music player, but hell, that's what itunes is for. With this you could grab some mp3's off a friend then take them home and add them to itunes in much the same way that you would with a usb flash drive.

Re: iPhone and iPod Touch apps

When you press on an icon and hold they will wiggle allowing you to move the apps as well as delete some of them. Any app with an X will allow you to delete it. Otherwise, you have to hack it.
