Advice for maintaining focus.

Please note before I go on the irony of posting this here while I should be working.

Anywho, for the past couple weeks, maybe four or five...possibly more, I've been completely unable to focus on my work. I will sit in front of my computer for the majority of the day staring at my work and none of it gets done. I'm not just talking about regular work but school work as well. I am getting my regular work half assedly done but it is always late and I think my employer is starting to notice. On top of that I've pretty much just stopped doing most my homework in school. It took me 2 days to freaking COPY a homework assignment; I can't even focus on cheating which takes almost no brain power whatsoever.

So I'm sure most of you know I'm in grad school but, I also work as a consultant. I currently have 2 contracts and 1 side job open and I just haven't been able to get any work done on any of them. Instead of working I'll sit and browse the forums, check digg, look for things to buy, constantly flip channels on tv or change whatever song I'm listening to, check facebook, whatever it may be. I know you are all obviously thinking that I need to stop doing all those things but when I actually sit down to focus on my work, I just can't do it. Just the other week I started one of my homework assignments early on a topic I've learned before and know and it took me 8 hours to do one problem and I couldn't even finish the homework assignment which is now over a week late.

I'm at the point where I'm so far behind in school and with work I'm pretty much failing and my adviser is recommending I withdraw from school and like get my shit straight before coming back if I even can come back; he wants me to go see a therapist and get a medical excuse for withdrawing. The thing is that the situation I'm in now is not necessarily new. When I was an undergrad I used to just work all the time and not sleep and I had no problems doing well at both my job and school and I obviously have a good track record because of where I am now. Now I can't even make it through the day without napping and when I sit down to work I just stare at it.

So anyways, I have a million things on my plate and I can't seem to focus on any of them. I was wondering if any of you have been in a situation like this and what you did to get through it.

Re: Advice for maintaining focus.

The only thing that helps a super ADD like me is setting attainable deadlines for work. I'm in grad school, too, so I make sure to schedule my time down to the smallest task both at home and at work.

By knowing I "have" to get something done by the end of the day, I'm usually able to focus better. Beyond that, the only thing I can recommend is maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, avoid alcohol (the one thing I don't do...) and exercise.

Re: Advice for maintaining focus.

The deadline thing is what used to do it for me too, but obviously it isn't anymore because I can't even get my homework done when its due, let alone my other work. I don't drink much at all, I've gotten drunk maybe once in the past 2 months and I definitely don't sleep well at night, not because of anything particular but I will always wake up before I need to and be tired.

A very mild anti-depressant will likely help, too. I was on one for a while to help me focus, but the, um, side effects weren't all that desirable (2-3 hour sex was fun when single, not so much every night as a married man...).
